Me and John Denver

I’ve got a song running over and over in my head.  “Hey it’s good to be back home again!  Sometimes this old farm feels like a long lost friend…..”

Do you remember John Denver or are you too young?  You can’t go your life without hearing some John Denver.  You’ve got to watch to the end to see the clothes.  I can’t believe we thought that looked good.

I got home yesterday afternoon and this song describes exactly how I felt.  I talked for a long time with everyone and caught up on everything.

Then I fell asleep.  It’s been a week since I had a nap and I don’t know how I survived.  Airplanes, long drives, several hotels, meeting lots and lots of new people.  I slept like the dead for about 2 hours.

I got really tired of life on the road.  That last day I got off the plane I was never so glad to see my simple, white mini-van.  Hallelujah!  No more squeezing everything I own into one tiny suitcase.  I’m not a tiny suitcase kind of girl.  I’m more like this.

Here are some highlights from my week away:

* My number one highlight was spending time with my roommate, Cyndi.  She is a fashion blogger, so adorable, so full of energy.  Clearly we are  opposites.  But we had a great time.  We kept discovering new subjects that we disagree on.  She likes a debate.  I do not.  So she’d start to talk about politics or theology or church and after about a second I’d reply with, “So, how’s your grandson?”  She’s so in love with him that she would get distracted and change the subject.  I love that you can be so different and still like each other SO MUCH!

* This is my favorite story from the weekend…..Cyndi has a thing about not getting onto crowded elevators.  We were on the 9th floor which meant I was unwilling to walk the stairs every time we had to go up or down.  So we’d wait, the elevator door would open and if it was crowded we’d tell the people to go on and we would wait for the next one.

One morning I was just tired of having to wait half an hour to go down, so the 3rd time the elevator door opened and it was, of course, full, I leaned toward all of the people on the elevator that were staring at us to get on and I shouted, “We have to wait for the next one.  She’s a kleptomaniac!”

I didn’t even realized I had used the wrong word until Cyndi started shouting “What?!  NO!  Claustrophobic!  Claustrophobic!  I’m NOT a kleptomaniac!”  But it was too late.  The doors had already closed.  She shouted down the shaft of the door practically begging the people to know that she doesn’t steal things and I was laughing myself silly.

* Texts.  The whole time I was away my boys would send me texts.  Sometimes they were just gibberish….Levi typing whatever he wanted on Grace’s phone.  Sometimes they were thoughtful.  My favorite one said, “Hi Mommy!  We miss you.  We love you x9

* Meeting so many interesting people.  Between the conference, my time in Dallas and my time in Houston I met a lot of amazing people.  My cup runneth over. I got to meet a few people in person that have been online friends for a while.  I just love that!

* Spending the last day with a good, good friend.  My friend that hosted me in Houston is someone that lifts me up and encourages me to grow in my relationship with Christ.  She tells me the truth.  She lives a life I admire.  That time was so refreshing for me.

All in all I’m mostly just so glad to be home.  I missed my babies, I missed my husband, I miss my bed and my recliner.  And yes, probably in that order.

Oh, and I missed y’all!  I thought of you often and I’m ready to hear what you’ve been up to.  What’s going on in your life?

  1. Lisa,
I love John Denver. We played Dreamland Express at our wedding! Glad you had a successful trip and made it back home safely. It’s always a good feeling to get back home.

    1. Amy, I don’t know that one! I’m going to go You Tube it now. I need a new John Denver song to get stuck on. Lisa~

  2. Another John Denver fan here! I wish I could say I AM too young to remember him, but alas, that is not true. (sigh.)

And having just been away for several days, I can fully relate to the incredibly fabulous joy of walking back into your own house and sleeping in your own bed.

Ahhhhh . . . . take me home, country roads!

    1. Becky, I am so glad I’m old enough to remember him. Did you watch the end of the video with Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash?!

I’m glad we’re both back home now. Lisa~

  3. Is your bed 9 feet high, 6 feet wide and soft as a downy chick, made from the feathers of forty-leven geese, with a whole bolt of cloth for the tick?? If so, I can see why you missed it.

Poor Cyndi, I feel her pain. I hope you wet yourself laughing at her.

    1. Sara, you know that is exactly what my bed is like. I did actually feel a little sorry for Cyndi when I accidentally announced to 15 people that she steals things. But I have never, ever felt sorry for you. You know you love hanging out with me in elevators. Lisa~

  4. We must be kindred spirits because I’ve been working on a post about John Denver too. Clearly, I’m not too young to remember him and LOVED my “Back Home Again” lp! Glad you had a good trip – it sounds like a lot of fun, but it is so good to get back home again!

    1. Angie, don’t you remember the skipping and scratches on the albums. Pennies on the arm to keep it down? Good times! Lisa~

  5. I liked him a lot back in late elementary school and early junior high days. Of course, since he lived in Colorado, we could sort of claim him as our own here, you know.

LOVE the kleptomaniac story!! That’s hilarious!!! Sounds like something that would come out of my mouth.

    1. Hello! Getting to chat with you at the end of the conference is one of my favorite memories. I’m really looking forward to getting to know you better! Lisa~

  6. Lisa – I too remember John Denver – and Johnny Cash & Glen Campbell. My father was a HUGE country western fan – so this was all we listened to in the car (until my sisters and I were old enough to drive LOL). But those songs bring back so many wonderful memories (Dad passed away 11 years ago) Thanks for the little trip down memory lane.

And yes can you believe those outfits?? I have some pictures that are buried away that need to stay there for sure. What were my parents thinking – red plaid jump suits???

    1. Mary Kay, my parents loved country &western too. I always said I would never listen to it when I grew up, but I guess you can’t deny your roots. LOL! I’ve got to see that red, plaid jumpsuit. Lisa~
