My Non-Olympic Weekend
It was another busy-ish weekend here. But before I fill you in on all of the fascinating details of our weekend I feel like I should tell you that we are not watching the Olympics. I hate to say it because I know that they are special to so many people, but we’re just not that into it here.
We started with a bang on Friday night by taking the kids to see a live production of The Wizard of Oz. Some of our best friends are in it, so we couldn’t miss the chance to see them on stage and the kids loved it!
The boys even got their picture taken with the witch.
It took me back to my childhood. I’m not sure if you were aware, but I was a witch for halloween when I was 5 and I was pretty-darn-awesome at it. My mom made me a witch costume complete with hat and broom and I recall wondering if everyone that saw me thought I was a real witch. Good times.
On Saturday I was planning to fill shop orders, but before I started I thought I would just spend an hour playing a little of the new Nancy Drew game that we just got. I like to play a little bit of these games so that I know what they are about and I can be sure they’re not too weird. It’s kind of the same as pre-tasting the cookies to be sure they’re not poison.
I was playing along and realized that I had been playing for several hours and ignoring the children all around me who were cleaning the bathrooms and making lunch. It was like backwards day…..Mom playing a computer game while the kids cleaned. Pretty much my idea of heaven. That and being able to eat all of the chocolate I want.
Since I was already halfway through the game I might as well go ahead and finish it. So that was my day on Saturday. Now that I think about it, I am noticing a pattern in my weekend. It’s Lisa’s childhood flashback weekend. Besides my incredible talents in kindergarten costume I also got to relive the irresponsibility and carelessness that were my teenage years.
On Saturday night James and I drove about an hour away to visit my grandfather, aunts and uncles who were getting together for the weekend. It was another flashback since these are the people in my life that still think of me as the 12 year old girl that tortured her brother in the back of the station wagon by constantly playing recordings of her own singing over the cassette recorder.
On Sunday I actually had to get up and do something productive. I worked in the shop for several hours filling orders then I made a few new products. I love making new products. It lets me get those creative juices flowing that are usually supressed by laundry and kids’ questions about Spiderman.
I added a new bucket that I adore. It’s fun loving.
And we’ve got some new vinyl number sets for using as table markers at weddings. But I could see lots of uses for them…wall decor, school room inspiration, labeling boxes, address numbers, you could get your phone number and stick it to the wall over your phone….oh my mind is churning.
That sums up my weekend. Childhood flashbacks and vinyl numbers.
Have a great week!
PTL, I’m not alone! We aren’t watching the Olympics either! We couldn’t anyway bc we don’t have cable, but I can think of a hundred over things Id rather do than watch sports on tv. Ewww.
Amy
Amy, It’s nice to know we’re not the only ones. Lisa~
When you mentioned your pretty-darn-awesome witch childhood witch costume, I immediately thought of Ramona the Pest, which takes me back to my childhood! The illustrations in the book were wonderful, and Ramona was also convinced that she was the most believable witch ever.
We’re sort of watching the Olympics occasionally, only because we happen to have cable at the moment and the kids are interested. They are frequently pre-empted by other more interesting things, though.
This is off topic, Lisa, but I’ve noticed that attending church doesn’t seem to be a part of your Sunday plans. I’m just curious what you teach your kids about church attendance or if you do attend somewhere.
I do hope I’m not being nosey, but I respect your great insight on child rearing and I’m curious as to what your views are on church and raising kids.
Thanks!
Deb Mantik
I have to admit, I’ve wondered the same thing. Again, not being nosey….well, maybe a little. 🙂
I’ll go ahead and say it… You all are missing some glorious stories and historic sporting events by not watching the Olympics!!! You really don’t have to “be into” sports or a sports fanatic to enjoy watching at least some of it. I’ve heard some great inside stories on the athletes and their families. GOOD patriotic stuff that only happens every few years. It’s history in the making.
Robin, I am sure you are right! I don’t have any issue with the Olympics and it would certainly be nice for the kids to see a little of it at least. It just keeps slipping our mind and we just don’t get into it. I am so glad you and your family are getting so much out of it. That’s awesome! Lisa~
