Superbowl Sunday

The weather has finally settled down.  I was beginning to wonder how much longer this little old farmhouse could take it.  We already have two broken pipes and one less lamp.

Without much insulation in the walls, this place gets pretty cold.  I decided to take advantage of the natural warmth God gave me and stop shaving my legs.  But I couldn’t sleep for the past two nights and it occurred to me at 3:00 this morning that perhaps the stubble was keeping me awake.  James says I am like the Princess and the Pea.  I can’t sleep if there’s even the tiniest light or noise or discomfort.  He says princess, I say he should be thankful I am being forced to be well groomed.  Anyway, I got up at 3:30 in the morning and took a shower and shaved my legs.  Ahhh….sweet sleep.

When it warmed up yesterday afternoon I opened the front door and yelled, “Run children, run!  Go outside!  Be free!”  We all shot out of the house and put 10 feet between us and the next person.  Being cooped up was getting to everyone.  I took advantage of the warm weather and headed to the grocery store.  We were low on butter, toilet paper and chocolate.  Pretty much the three things we can’t live without.

I also needed powdered sugar, which, for some reason, they were completely out of at the store.  How does a grocery store run out of powdered sugar?  Did the cold temperatures cause a run on confectioner’s sugar?  Were there icing emergencies?  Is someone in this town hoarding powdered sugar in case the streets are frozen and they have a birthday?

My plan was to make cookies for today’s big party.  No, not the Super Bowl.  My girlfriends and I are boycotting football and watching “What Not to Wear” while we eat tacos and icingless cookies.  What’s better than hanging out with your best friends and making fun of other people’s clothes?  Nothing that I can think of.  It makes us feel better about ourselves and our ability to accessorize.

The weatherman is saying there will be more cold days later this week.  I don’t know how you Northerners do it.  Now that I am freshly shorn I may have to resort to wearing jeans under my skirts, which is an episode of “What Not to Wear” all by itself.

Great.  Now they’ll make fun of ME and I won’t have any cookies with icing to comfort myself.

  1. Your blog is a blessing….even when I am feeling sick, I read your words and laughter bubbles up and makes me giggle. Thanks for the fun, and sharing it all with us…. ♥

  2. So funny! It would take something pretty major to make me want to get up and take a shower at 3am!

PS: A word from someone who’s been there and done that…if you can just get through the prickly stage, you’re home free! 🙂

  3. And here in Australia we have been experiencing a heat wave! So hot you can’t sleep at night, some weird insects that look like fleas but aren’t, that fit through screens and attack you in droves and our pool now feels like a warm bath! Thank goodness it has rained overnight and temperatures will be down today, back to school – I can’t put it off any longer!

  4. Oh, that sounds like such a fun party!! One year, I’d love to come : ) (ha! See me, weasling my way into your circle of friends…..) So very fun.

And, you don’t know it, but you made my heart smile big time with the “Run and be free!!” phrase. It’s a phrase with much personal significance in my life. So, that was a fun little smile. Thank you!

I’m sorry your cookies had to be without icing. I am glad the weather is calming down for you. We’re having hot down here, like the lady in Australia. This is the time of year that makes me wish I looked decent with short hair. I don’t. Oh well.

  5. OK…You make me laugh so much! Shaving your legs at 3 in the morning??? That is hysterical! And the fact that you can’t find powdered sugar is funny too! Do you not have more than one grocery store to choose from?

I am totally with you…a What Not To Wear time would be fantastic!! See, you might find me and my family on your door step soon if you keep taunting us with cold weather, cookies and What Not to Wear sessions! Well, at least us two girls! Probably not son and hubby! Ha!

  6. Lisa, I thought of you often this week. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it was the fact that I almost went insane (not that I associate you with insanity 😉 ) being cooped up inside with my 5 blessings. One of them almost went insane too, this is where I thought of you. See in my mind I think, “Lisa’s children would never act like this!” but I know that you’d say something like, “no trust me we were on the brink ourselves” but then I’d say to myself she is totally trying to make me feel better. That was just a long stream of pointless thoughts. Maybe I did get a little frostbite on the brain.

Our family would love to have you visit during the super cold days. You could warm up by the not-so-rustic gas fireplace.

  7. Wow! Apparently I am sooo not a good baker! Icing is made with powdered sugar? I’m more familiar with the Dough Boy who sells it in a container! At least I don’t have to worry about the store running out of that item – I think there are over a dozen flavors. I’ll bring you a few to sample! My daughter and I are big fans of What Not to Wear (and Say Yes to the Dress). She loves to put together “a stylish outfit that looks appropriate mama” – hmmm. . . . she’s 6, so I say that with a wink!

I can’t wait to tell my kids to “Run and Be Free”, but with all the cold and rain they would rather stay inside and make sure I learn my lessons in parental patience each and every day!
    Gotta love ’em!
    Blessings to you!

  8. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Super Bowl Sunday.
I do so wish I’d read this before and known about the leg shaving thing… I’d have teased you more.

Can’t wait to do it again!

  9. oh, that is so funny to read about prickly legs keeping you awake! that has happened to me! one more thing, i’m pretty sure the make-up is new since we first met….all those long years ago now. too bad life was so busy for both of us when we were in texas at the same time 🙂 <3

  10. Since I use very little powdered sugar, I discovered how to make my own from granulated sugar: in the blender! Just put sugar in the blender and blend away!

  11. well Lisa, you have to let them grow a little longer, they get softer (tee-hee) At our house we call it growing your own socks. Thanks for a good laugh, but I hate to say it, NOTHING would make me get up at 3am for a shower.
(I can’t wait for warmer weather…this cold weather is awful terrible yukky.)
