My Decorating Dial Has Been Turned On

The weekend was quick and full.  When I got to my parent’s house Mom said almost immediately, “I want you to help me move some furniture.”

Oh yeah baby.  That was when I knew it was going to be a great visit.  I love me some furniture moving.

Mom had some ideas about some changes she wanted to make and was waiting for me to get there so we could figure it out.  I am her decorating buddy.  It is my understood role and I embrace it.  We move furniture, we look at magazines, we study paint colors and we bond.  Like the men do with sports.  But better.

The problem is, I have a little knob.  It’s in my brain.  When it’s flipped on it can be very hard to turn off again.  And moving Mom’s furniture turned the knob on and got the juices flowing and now I am itching to do some stuff around here.

The whole drive home my mind was working overtime.  “What can I do for free?”  “What should I put on the floating shelves now that they are emptied from Valentine’s Day?”  “Is there time to stop at the Pottery Barn outlet before I go home?”

I drove past a flea market and that dial in my brain went from low to high.  I was sure there was something there for less than $20 that I couldn’t live without.

But James and I have made a no-spending pledge, so I drove right past.  I felt a little sick, but I did it.  No flea market, no Pottery Barn outlet, I didn’t even go to Target.  Thus proving what an excellent wife I am (see that Michele?).

While I was at my parents’, Mom gave me some big finials that she isn’t using.  I am planning to do something so cute with them that she will see it and want them back.  But I won’t give them to her because I’m the daughter and she’s the mother and that is her understood role, to let me take her things and keep them forever.  Circle of life.  I don’t make the rules.

All in all a great weekend.  I moved furniture, got free finials, laughed myself silly on Saturday night and made my husband happy by not spending any money.

  1. hmmmm….you could always spend that decorating adrenaline here 🙂 Maybe *I* need a trip to your mom’s, because my motivation is waning….. LOL
    How’s your Dad feeling?

  2. The perfect weekend if you ask me! I love it!

We are getting ready to do some painting to freshen up some bedrooms….can’t wait!

  3. Well, I think getting FREE finials nearly counts as though you went to the flea market! Your husband is so honored and please right now 😉 You and your mom sound like me and my mom. We strategize about what to do at her house when I go there, then we figure stuff out when she comes here….then we email back and forth and bounce off ideas. Now, my daughter (who’s only seven) is starting to get the itch, too! She’s actually given me some great ideas!

  4. So glad you had a wonderful weekend. Good job not spending money—IT IS HARD, I walked away from something yesterday and it would have been so easy to just say yes.

Hope you have a great week and I can’t wait to see what you do with the finals.

  5. My daughter was only gone 5 days but came back to newly sewn pillows on her couch. I’m the mom. It is indeed the circle of life.

I was laughing at your most recent RWW comment regarding The King’s Speech. In your recommendation you said “It has a little bit of swearing.” My husband and I did indeed see it and wonder what your idea would be of a lot of swearing. Hee hee.

Our favorite was when he ended a big bleeped speal with “and t-ts”.

  6. So glad you made it home safely and had fun with your mom.
I am not moving ANYONE’S furniture for them anymore.
(Unless my decorating dial is on).
If your stash is like mine, you have plenty of somethings to decorate with, right?
If we lived next door to each other, we could just swap stuff, and it would feel new.
    Finials count as new.
How long is that no-spending pledge in effect?
    I love you girlie!
