You Are Invited

It’s about time I show you all our guest house.   We use it almost every weekend for special guests, VIPs and vagabonds.

Consider this your Official Invitation to come and stay.  Nothing will come in the mail.  You’ll have to print this out and hand it to the clerk at the front desk when you arrive.

We sometimes put a special “Welcome” sign on the door.

Yours probably won’t say “Kenneys”.

Come on in…..

It’s 550 square feet of pure bliss.  Well, maybe not bliss.  But it’s got air-conditioning and it’s free.

I’ve got plans for the guest house.  It needs some work.  But all in all it’s cozy and relaxing.

Everything in the whole place is a hand-me-down.  Some of it I’ve already recovered or painted, some is waiting its turn for a makeover.

But you can be sure we have plenty for the kids to do.  If they don’t like Duplos, they can help feed the chickens and milk the goats.

The other side of the tiny living room.  I built this shelf a few years ago.

It has a little secret…..

Yes!  It’s a secret door that leads to the bathroom!  How fun is that?!  I cut a hole in the back of the linen closet to create an opening for the bathroom.  The only other access is through the bedroom.

I love my family tree.  It makes me happy.

Keep panning around and you’ll see the two bunks that are built right into the wall.  Two full sized twin beds are up there.  Just lock the kids up and have the evening to yourself.

I made this screen to hang between the living room and kitchen.  I really need to add some new pictures!

The kitchen is very small.  It doesn’t have a stove or oven….just a microwave and toaster oven.  Oh!  And a fridge.

Don’t ask to see what’s beyond the door in the kitchen.  That’s a garage and it’s scary out there.

There’s a small bedroom just big enough for a full sized bed and a port-a-crib.

Proof that I was cool before anyone knew it.  I painted this dresser white looong before everyone else was painting their furniture.

I remodeled the bathroom 3 years ago.  I tore out the fiberglass tub and built a shower and shelves for linens (since I used the linen closet for the secret door).

I was going for a beach theme when I originally did the guest house.  But next spring I’d like to fix it up a little and maybe take out all of the beach stuff.  I mean, who am I kidding?

I know I joke a lot, but I am serious about the invitation.  We consider this our family’s ministry.  We have a constant stream of guests, many of whom we’ve never met before.  Like the Kenneys, a lovely family from Minnesota that drove all the way down here to stay in our guest house (and go to Film Festival, but I am sure that was secondary to seeing us!).  We never charge anything.  We want people to come, relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of life.  Our goal is to love on you and encourage you.  Oh, and in case your husbands ask….yes, it has satellite TV.

The calendar fills up quickly.  Get your reservation in soon!

  1. What a ministry! I’m sure you’ll never know the lasting impact your hospitality has on families needing a bit of respite.

  2. And don’t forget – it’s a lovely spot for honeymooners with next to nothing for a wedding budget. (I don’t think I ever shared the photos with you of the scattered rose petals and candles all over… They were so grateful.)

Oh – and I happen to know personally that it’s also a great spot to sleep if your air conditioning goes out in the middle of summer!

Thanks for the hospitality – both directly and indirectly.

  3. Hmmm, I wonder how much it would cost to fly 8 people from Australia to come and visit???
Looks great, We are going to have one of those in our yard one day, but I will have to wait until the kids grow up and leave home before I can use it for guests as it will be needed for bedrooms until then LOL!

  4. I hear those old cars calling my hubby’s name and now that we don’t have TV and you do, he is sure to want to come!!!!!!! This is such a beautiful blessing that your family has, I love it. Hope all is well you way, I am off to teach all day.

  5. I (and my sweety) have also benefited from the ministry of the guest house (anniversary stay)….we felt so blessed by your families hospitality!!!! I know someday I would like to run away to your house just for a “mommies weekend to herself” kind of get away!!!!

    Hugs 🙂

  6. I love that so much! You are like us, only we don’t have a guest house/room. We have a large backyard (for So. Cal) and have a constant stream of people using it! Someday (when the kids are grown) I would love to have at least a nice guest room for visitors coming here! We don’t have a guest house – the city wouldn’t permit it – but we do what we can with the Lord’s house – we tell the kids it’s not ours, it’s God’s house and yard!

  7. Oh, our home away from home when we were down there for the academy and festival. Thank you for opening it up to us! It was truly a blessing. When we have guests here, they have the kids’ rooms and we all have to share a bathroom (don’t let that discourage you from driving up to MN from TX though!). Thank you again – just seeing it one more time brings be back the sounds, smells, hospitality and heat of TX – we loved every minute of it with your family.

  8. I LOVE IT! it’s beautiful and so relaxing. I’ve always wanted to buy an old Airstream trailer and fix it up for a “guest house”. Yours is waaaay better.

  9. OH MY!!! I know what’s on my “wish list” next time I come home (to Texas) – a night in that dreamy guest house!! (and to meet ya’ll of course!)
Thanks for sharing…and what a wonderful ministry! I would LOVE to do the same thing when we move to the farmhouse!
    Many Blessings!

  10. Dear Painting When Painting Wasn’t Cool,
I’m gonna bring my hubby (who refuses to let me paint ANYTHING) and you can give him a presentation on accepting paint in your home and (gasp) ON YOUR FURNITURE, of all things! Consider it your ministry, please!

    Love,

  11. It looks very inviting. I’d love to come and stay. Could I see a closeup of the family tree? I need to make one or something like it.

  12. I am dumbfounded! I couldn’t believe what I was reading, are there really people so gracious still living on the earth? You are amazing, just amazing!
