The Bridal Shower Debacle

My girls and I had a day and a half to crank out our contribution to today’s bridal shower.

Grace baked 200 corn bread muffins and baked a pie, Hope and Patience sewed 50 bean bags in the colors of the shower for the little kids to play with, Patience and Grace made 20 Scripture cards for the tables, Faith and I cut out Cricut vinyl for the 20 or so pumpkins we had to decorate, stuck them on and tied umpteen ribbons.

We ironed tablecloths and wrapped candles and lined baskets….the list went on for miles.  Faith and I were up after midnight making flower arrangements.

I was having a happy thoughts in my head.  I kept rejoicing that this was my last morning to wake up at an ungodly hour.  Tomorrow and the next few days….sweet sleep. I can lie in bed until 7:30 if I want to.  Ahhh…I could see myself in one of those mattress commercials where the people look like they have never been more comfortable.

We arose before 6, finished packing, put on our prettiest dresses, fed the boys and headed to the other hostess’ house for the shower.

*Ding-Dong*

Her husband answered the door.  We stood there grinning with our darling flowers and dessert and corn bread.  He looked stunned.

I just kind of swooped past him and started setting my things down.  We had a truckload and it would take a while to get it all set up.

Her kids all stared at us like we were aliens.  Then finally the mom came into the room and started talking to me like everything was normal.  Then she said it. The bomb.

“I’m sorry the house is a mess, but tomorrow when we have the shower it will be……”

WHAT?!  TOMORROW?!?!?!?!

I had the date wrong!  Oh-my-stinkin-goodness!

Now we have to do it all again.  So much for me and my Sealy Posturpedic mornin’.

But after about 30 seconds of getting over the shock, I took it in stride.

The Lord numbers my steps and I felt that peace that says, “It’s all in My hands child.  Trust me.”

I trust Him.  I may never know why this happened, but at least our shower work is all finished and waiting at someone else’s house ready for us to show up again tomorrow.

Dear God,

Thank you for taking care of everything in ways that I will never understand.

Oh and God, if it’s OK, may I please sleep until 7:30 on Friday morning?

Thanks,

Your Sleepy Servant, Lisa~

  1. I can completely and totally relate… and I hope you don’t mind me laughing as I read your story!! Here’s to life and learning to trust in God above our weakness. 🙂

  2. Naomi….laugh all you want! You can be sure they’re laughing at me over here too. I have to agree…it is funny. It will probably be even funnier in a few days. LOL! Lisa~

  3. This is funny! I sat at my desk and laughed. You told the story so well I had such a hilarious picture in my head of you and your girls fixed up, sweeping in with such efficiency to your friend’s house. I can only imagine the looks on everyone’s faces!

Hopefully you and the your “little women” can just have a day of rest today. Maybe that’s what the Lord wanted for all of you. Just a day with all the immediate work done and an opportunity to sit and enjoy His blessings.

    Loving all of you!

  4. ROFLOL!!! I can see her face, too ;-P You are SO efficient, my dear. I’ll be up late TONIGHT, thankyouverymuch.

  5. Oh Lisa, that’s the best story!
Have a relaxing day and a fun party tomorrow (which is today here!) and I hope you have a nice sleep in on Friday, Saturday and Sunday……

  6. I am not laughing, just grinning!

I am sure it will be lovely…take pictures please!

Oh, and I love your daughter’s names…such lovely virtues!

  7. Dear Early Bird,
I happens to the best of us (or worst in my own case). I had the wrong week in my head for our annual church convention this Summer. Sadly, I had it a week LATER than it really was and so the open house I had planned (and already sent the invites) for that week didn’t go so well!

    Ah, well…

P.S. I noted your girls’ virtue names as well… Our daughter’s name is Felicity Blythe and our second son’s name is Prosper. Love the meaning behind them.

  8. One of my biggest fears! We’re a punctual family and sometimes we arrive before others. When we see no cars at the destination I always worry that I have the wrong day.

This is my college roommate’s fault. I remember clearly the day she arrived at a baby shower one day early. The mom-to-be answered the door. It was supposed to be a surprise which, obviously, was ruined the moment she opened the door seeing my roommate standing there with a baby gift and a puzzled look on her face!

  9. Oh my. I’m so sorry that I did not ‘butt in’—for once. 🙂 You e-mailed me on Tuesday night and asked if you would see me ‘at the shower tomorrow’. I actually typed you a message to explain that we would not be able to come, AND I included a line that asked, “Isn’t the shower on Thursday?” I left in that line until the last minute. Then, because I just knew you MEANT to say that the shower was on the next day, and because I did not want to seem bossy, I deleted that line. I did not want to question you—you are after all, always so ‘put together’. I should have said something! But hey, it must have felt incredible to be completely ready for an event an entire day before! Just call yourself the ‘Trend-setter’ that you are. 🙂

Hope the real day of the shower is going great!
    Love,
    Pennie
