Mom’s House

If you’re like me, you drive past houses and wonder what they’re like inside.  Or you meet a new friend and think, “I can’t wait to see her house!”

Since I’m here for the week, I thought you’d like to see my parent’s house.

The living room is really relaxing and lovely at the same time.  While they have nice things, Mom has never been nervous about the kids breaking her stuff or us ruining anything.  She believes a home is meant to live in and enjoy.

This next picture makes the backs of the entertainment center look more red than it is.  It’s much more subtle in person.

The couch is from Pottery Barn.  The green is a slipcover and it is khaki underneath.  I love the option of changing your couch.  And I especially loved it when Elijah threw up on it a few months ago.  WE just took the cover off and washed it….it makes me want one!

The kitchen….so big.  Mom wants all of your thoughts.  She’d like to paint the cabinets and possibly put the same black granite on the island that is in the rest of the kitchen.  She’d also like to add a backsplash.  What do you think?

The master bedroom is very serene.  I never go in here.  As a kid I wasn’t really allowed in their bedroom.  Even though I didn’t grow up in this house and all of the furniture is different….I still have that forbidden feeling about my parent’s bedroom.

One of the guest rooms.  I love, love this bedding.

And I’ve got to show yo the little chair I recovered for her a few years ago.  She’s had this chair since time began.  It has been orange/gold flocked, avacado green, mauve…..this is the best so far!

This is my favorite room.  We call it the “white room.”  It’s just an easy room to be in.

I am so glad you took the tour.  Mom will be so glad to know your thoughts about her kitchen….paint?  Or not?

Added….some of you have asked what color Mom wants to paint the cabinets.  She’s thinking of a light, buttery yellow.

  1. I painted ( well Hubby and I ) my cabinet and have loved it. Everyone thought I was crazy because they are custom solid wood cabinets, I didn’t care. It is hard work, lots of sanding, priming and painting. It has been over a year and no problems with chipping of anything, so I think it holds up just fine also. So I say go for it paint those cabinets. I would also change the counter top on the island, after having granite, I love that it is so easy to use and take care of, so I would want it everywhere. Backsplashes are hard for me because they always end in weird places or suddenly there is not a top cabinet so I am not good at asvice on those, because of my personal weirdness. BUt make sure you tell your mother she has a beautiful home, I love how inviting it is. My favorite is the red in the bookcases just beautiful.

Hope you and your mom and dad are having a great day,

  2. Their house is gorgeous! I like the warmth of the colors and textures.
Wow! Thank your mom for letting us see. :0)

  3. What color does she want to paint the cabinets? A black counter would be great, but if she paints the cabinets it might get too dark unless they are painted a light color. But, then, I am crazy about light. So don’t mind me…

  4. I prefer a house to be lighter/brighter, so if she put black granite on the island would she offset it by painting the base lighter? Painted cabinets is one of my all-time favorite things for a kitchen. Some day, some day! I will get to do this. (I also like painted brick but Michael gags at the thought, whatever.)

  5. What a beautiful house. That is one of the things I love about 4 Moms doing the house tours, I get to see inside so many houses! Not in a stalker-type way, but I love seeing how people decorate.
My kitchen is yellow. Just a shade brighter than buttery. I love it. Mostly because I hate cooking and really needed my kitchen to be cheery if I was going to spend so much time in it.

  6. The kitchen has such a nice layout. Adding a backsplash would really add in the “wow” factor. Some of the new glass tiles are amazing.

In regards to the cabinets, I like the warmth that the wood provides.

My thoughts on the island is that if black granite was added to the black based island it would definitely make that the thing that mosts stands out in the room. IE THE BLACK HOLE.
If you did the black granite countertop I would then paint the island~ like the nice green on the walls or pick out another color from the adjoining room to help unify the spaces.

  7. Hi Lisa,

Your mother’s house is beautiful and while I have an affinity for painted wood and especially painted cabinetry there is no way I could paint those cabinets. They are far too beautiful as is. I also like the black/white island just the way it is. If I was going to change anything, I guess it would be paint & backsplash although I sadly don’t have any suggestions right now. I’ll think about it and get back to you though, I love a good challenge
