Being Different

There are places I just don’t fit in.

As a dress wearing, homeschooling mother of nine…..sometimes I am just plain out of place.

At the bank…what am I doing there anyway? One look at me and you KNOW I don’t have any money.

At the car wash. Please. My car hasn’t been washed since the Clinton administration.

The gym. No explanation necessary.

And today…..when I went to….

The mall.

My daughter asked for a calendar for her 16th birthday. OK, I was running errands anyway so I stopped at a calendar store in the mall. There must have been 1,000 calendars there. All tasteless, tacky, offensive or all of the above.

When the goth, 17 year old salesgirl finally noticed me and asked if she could help me find something I told her what I was looking for. She said, “Oh. You HAVE to get her a Twilight calendar!”

“No thanks. We aren’t into that.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we don’t do movies.”

“Huh? Well…..(not sure how to respond)….there’s a book also.”

“No thanks. We don’t watch or read that stuff. I’ll just take this calendar with kittens on it.”

As I handed her my money she had the strangest look on her face.

It was is if I had just told her my arms were made of cookie dough and she could eat one if she wanted to.

She finally said it, “I’m sorry. I don’t understand what you mean when you say, ‘We don’t watch or read that stuff.’ What do you mean?”

“What is it that you don’t understand?”

“Well, EVERYONE likes Twilight.”

“Not everyone.”

“But, your daughter HAS to like it. All kids like it.”

“Not all kids.”

“But. She’s seen it, right? I mean, everyone has seen it.”

This was going nowhere.

I told her that we didn’t see vampire movies or movies about forbidden teenage love. I said that it doesn’t matter to us if it’s popular. We believe in keeping our thoughts pure and not filling our heads with things that will draw us toward evil.

She stared at me blankly.

“Well, how about a Harry Potter calendar then?”

I paid and left.

I’ll go back to the place where I fit better…..

Home Depot, Walmart and the flea market.

Or maybe I should just stay home.

  1. Just for the record, no "Twilight" here either. I'd much rather watch a beautiful sunset.

  2. Don't worry Lisa, everyone feels out of place sometimes. I don't feel out of place at the bank, the gym, or the mall but I do feel out of place (and am treated like a weirdo) when I am at the following places:

    At any location or get-together that has to do with crafts or scrapbooking;

    With a group of women who all want epidurals, complain about their husbands, and have their kids in pre-school;

    When surrounded by Obama enthusiasts;

    I am certain there are more.

  3. Never seen it read it or otherwise. Nor am I the least bit drawn to the vampire craze.

    Can't wait to get off this spilling ball of evil and live with my family in God's perfect, vampire free kingdom!

  4. I think I fit right in with your group of friends! Here in the LIBERAL Tucson land, I might just be the ONLY one who has not seen or had anything to do with Harry Potter OR Twilight stuff.

    Wish I had quarter for every time I have said "I'm not into that" I could retire back to the glorious sane Hill country…pretty sure my kid is the only one in her class too that is not into vampires.
