The Kids’ Rooms

Our house is a maze of little rooms.  Up ladders, add-ons, around corners are little, bitty rooms where the children sleep and keep their vast amounts of “important” things.

Have you noticed the ladder in the living room?

It leads to a loft that we built when we added on the living room.

Jacob uses this loft as his bedroom.  It’s simple, clean and really, really small.

This is pretty much the whole room. Jacob is a tidy kid and it’s a good thing because this room is so small he wouldn’t be able to fit much up here.

Down the ladder, through the dining room/school room, around the corner and down the hall is another stairway/ladder combination.

It leads to a finished attic space where three of the girls sleep.  Those aren’t water spots on the ceiling.  It used to be the boys’ room and we had clouds.  We are planning to paint the whole space some time this fall. But you know how those kinds of plans go.  Those clouds will be there when my grandchildren come to visit.

Back downstairs Grace has her own room.  It’s really small and barely fits her clothes and film equipment.  But she’s grateful for a space of her own.

Across the hall from Grace is the boys’ room.  I painted a barn on a closet that was built in when the house was originally built in 1923.

If we pan to the right we can see their bed.  Two boys sleep in here.

More panning reveals the door that leads to the girls’ stairs and to the boys’ bathroom.

Hi Elijah!  Here you can also see the terrific IKEA bookshelf.  It holds all of our children’s books and a lot of the boys’ toys.

Turn all the way around and you can see the other side of the “barn” and the chalkboard wall.

Right off of the boys’ room is Noah’s room.  If you are new here, we added Noah’s room onto the house this past February.

And of course there’s the nursery.

Wow.  It seems like a lot of rooms, but the house doesn’t feel big at all.  All of the rooms are very small.  We’ve got kids stuck in every corner, but we love it!

  1. I love your home – how fun to explore. And I love the way you decorate. Inspiring. I am still looking for some lockers for my kids school stuff…..

  2. Absolutely love. I wish I could convince my fiancé of the great fun a family this large would be! He is an only child, so he’s not with the large family idea 🙂

  3. I love how you just think outside the box and find cubbies for the kids. It’s brilliant! Who says bedrooms have to be huge? Besides, when you have darling matching bedding and a barn painted on your closet who needs anything else?!

    Thanks for the photos!

  4. I adore the painted barn. Everything is wonderfully cozy. It is so good for children to share. My 3 sisters and I shared one small room. Still good memories.

I was noticing your clock wall art in your living room as I was thinking it would look good in the office. Two questions.
Did you ever do a tutorial on that?
Is the 3rd clock sort of oblong/oval in shape and purchased at Hobby Lobby? I think I have the same clock. 🙂 I refer to it as the White Rabbit’s Pocket watch.

It is a dream of mine to truly spend a good amount of time on an Amish farm working. If your friends ever need in extra hands…. happy sighs of contemplation.

  5. Where did you get that set of bunkbeds that the bottom bunk is right on the floor? I am considering bunks for our daughters, but they are very young and that would be perfect.
    Thanks

  6. I really love the barn closet. You have such vision. Did you make the cover for the glider? What a great idea. We just bought one and they really are not that attractive. I love the long skirt on yours. And the ability to throw the cover in the wash.

  7. Laura, I got the oval clock at Pier 1.

Stacy, I got the boys’ bunk at IKEA. $199!

Shannon, I did make the slipcover for the glider. But you should know that like all slipcovers, it has to be straightened pretty often. Especially the ones I make! 🙂 Lisa~

  8. How cute!! I love the horse on the wall….all the bedrooms are really great! Your home has been an inspiration. Thank you for sharing pictures.

  9. I have seven children, ages 10 down to 7 mos. I always thought I would like to have one big boys’ room and one big girls’ room, but seeing your house, I really like all the small rooms tucked away here and there. Gives some more privacy when they want/need it. I like your creativity in finding spots for them all. The ladders make me think of Little House on the Prairie and their ladder to their loft. Thanks for showing us! Praying for your Dad.
