Embracing Modesty, No. 34
This week I wanted to share what we wear when we exercise. I get many questions about this, so I thought I’d just answer those today.
While it may look unusual, we still wear skirts even when we exercise. It is easy, comfortable and it covers what we want to cover. Like I have shared before, we don’t sacrifice our modesty for anything. Not swimming or exercising or physical labor or extreme heat. We have the goal of being modest and feminine above comfort or ease, so we work around it.
But truly, wearing skirts for exercise doesn’t pose any problems. The idea is not to be hindered by your clothes, which we aren’t. We can wear leggings or bike shorts under them if we’re going to be bending a lot, but I never do. I just wear my beloved Spanx underneath my stretchy skirt, oh….and a shirt of course!
My girls do tend to be more active, so they will have bike shorts under their skirts. They like a simple, very lightweight skirt with a t-shirt and sneakers (do people call them sneakers anymore?)
We find our exercise skirts in various places….Target, Old Navy, Walmart, Forever 21, Cato, anywhere they sell inexpensive basic pieces.

And this is how I look every morning when I leave for my walk:
But after the walk I look more like this:
It’s so easy to move in a skirt.
We were jogging for this picture, but I had no idea the girls were being so exaggerated and kicking their legs way up. Next time I’m going to be last so I can keep up with the silliness.
Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check out our gallery of posts from our Embracing Modesty series!
You always make me smile! That after walk shot! That’s me too! Have an amazing weekend!
Love Faith’s shoes, you guys are so cute!
Came across this on Pinterest. Had to laugh at your “after” shot! LOL! I have been wearing skirts (modest!) most days of the week for a little over a year now. In winter I wear jeans sometimes, but usually with a long shirt to cover my bottom. Sooo freeing! So wonderful to not dress for attention. I think most women of the world don’t realize how obsessed with their looks they really are! We are bombarded by immodest images that the world has accepted as normal and okay. But there is freedom in the Lord. Freedom when you dress prettily in the morning, with no concern over “do I look hot in this?” So much freedom when you don’t concern yourself with what other think! Dress to please the Lord. In everything you do, do it unto the Lord. It really makes you accountable when you realize that you were dressing to impress/attract others. Many will argue, “No. I dress to impress myself.” But where did the images of how you should look come from? Secular world. The ME ME ME world. Anyway, I babble on…great post!
I still call them sneakers! 🙂
I call them sneakers, too! Of course, my husband loves to tease me about it … 🙂
My 9 yr. old daughter saw a picture of one of your daughters on Instagram and said “Oh! Is that one of those modesty girls?” So now at our house you have earned the title of “The Modesty Girls”! What a wonderful thing to be known as!
OK – I’m ‘out of the loop’ apparently. what are they called if not ‘sneakers’? And silly girls – gotta love ’em. How blessed you are!
Where did you get your stretchy skirt? I will be starting a workout program next week that our church offers. However, since having decided to go all skirts about 2 years ago, I never thought about workout clothes. Before I would wear knee length baggy shorts and a big t-shirt – truthfully that is what I wear in the privacy of my home when I do workout. Just wondering where to start looking for stretchy skirt.
Enjoy seeing all ya’lls outfits!!!
Hi there,
You mentioned being modest when you go swimming. What do you wear when you’re in the pool?
Hi Julie! Here’s a post I did over the summer about what we wear when we swim: http://50.87.248.66/~thepenp8/2013/05/embracing-modesty-no-19-swimsuit-edition/
Thanks! Lisa~
