Embracing Modesty, No. 25
Well friends, the heat is officially here. Yesterday it was over 100° and sweltering. And it’s only going to get hotter. So we are being careful how we dress. Being modest is important to us, but so is avoiding death.
The key is wearing cotton and lightweight fabrics. The more gauzy it is the cooler you will be. We will still wear a tank under a low cut shirt as long as they are both thin and breathable.
This lightweight top Hope has on looks so cute and cool for summer. Under it she is wearing a great cami that we got from Modesty 4 Me. It is a high neck cami that is comfortable and affordable. I was excited to find it since most tanks can still be too low for us. AND the sweet people at Modesty 4 Me will give you $5 off your first order if you use discount code FB25. Hooray!
Here she is again in a very thin bright summer skirt and simple t-shirt. I love her cheerful style!
Next Faith has on a really light white skirt. This skirt is so cool it’s practically like having nothing on, but still modest. The teal color she has layered beneath the top is just the bottom of a shirt that she cut off to make a band she can wear like this. It doesn’t add any heat.
In this last picture I am wearing a little dress I got at Target with a shorter skirt under it. In the fall I wear it with dark hose and a sweater. But now I can wear it for the warm weather. I love a versatile piece! And the flowers are from my friend Angelina at JoJo and Eloise to raise money for a precious baby who is very sick and her parents need help with the medical bills. I am so glad to be a part of a community that supports those in need!
Please forgive my pasty-white-never-seen-the-sun legs. I need to look into getting some of that tanning lotion my friend Cyndi from Walking in His Grace recommends. I look like some kind of lower half vampire.
And while we’re at it, I don’t know how my hair got so light! I did get a few highlights put in a while ago, but it keeps getting lighter and lighter. I guess it’s all of the time I spend in the pool, but I stay in the shade and my hair didn’t do this last year. I am puzzled by the whole thing.
Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check out our Embracing Modesty Gallery to keep up with our whole year of modest outfits!

I love your idea about wearing a longer skirt underneath a too-short dress. I see so many cute dresses that are just a little too short for me – a pencil skirt underneath would avoid adding bulk while adding length. Cute!
I love all the outfits! I have to try the t-shirt- cut into a band trick! thanks for sharing!
You look beautiful, Lisa! I think the lighter highlights really look good on you. And of course your girls look lovely too. 🙂 Love these Modesty posts. Our oldest girl is 13 and is starting to want more input on what she wears. (apparently I can’t dress my kids in Winnie the Pooh onesies forever! ha. 🙂
Anyway, since we’re in missions, we get lots of stuff donated, etc, so our choices are sometimes rather odd, but I love your layering ideas. It’s very helpful for what we have to work with! Can you tell me where you found your girls’ knee length gauzy style skirts? Thanks, Lisa!
I TOTALLY agree with your choices for summer; skirts are soooooooo much cooler, and I love the maxi look again this year. so much to do with them and the tanks that are out are so cute. Add a low slung belt and off you go! Stay cool this summer, Lisa!
Lisa, I have to say that of all the “modesty” post I read, yours is the most practical and the least preachy. I love all of you girls’ sense of style (that is probably the most grammatically incorrect sentence I have written today=)). Your heart shines through. You are teaching modesty-not as a list of do’s and don’t’s, but as a heart thing. Yay! And thank you!
What is it with the trend to have tops, tanks, camis, etc, cut so low?!?!? I wear “plus” sizes, and Lane Bryant is especially bad for that. Several times I have found a lovely top that could only be wearable with a tank or cami under it.
I had to laugh, as I have the same trouble with tan arms and white legs. I strive to stay pale (I have a tattoo on my arm that I wish to protect) so I slather arms and my feet with sunscreen. My arms are still brown, my feet still get strap marks from my Chacos (usually before the end of March LOL) and yet the little bit of leg I show with my capris is always glowing white! I need more long skirts, like Hope’s gorgeous pink one, so that I won’t notice!
As I have posted before I love this series. It has been such an encouragement to me. I came to wearing “skirts only” a little later in life and didn’t know how to wear skirts on an every day basis in a practical way especially since we live on a farm. Anyway, that has been almost 3 years ago and your blog has been an encouragement to me and given me many ideas.
Btw, love those sandals your are wearing. Are the platform? Would you mind sharing who makes them? Thanks again. Blessings!
I think dresses and skirts are cooler in the summertime…especially in the hot, humid south! I have looked at those tanks…they are a little pricey for my pocket book, but their are not a lot of other options available. Everything is SO low these days.
Ya’ll all look so cute AND cool. Love, love, love your summer highlights. You look beautiful!
one trick I have found is to take an Old Navy Tank and wear it backwards…they are higher cut in the back…it works really well! and they are pretty affordable!
I even have some $4 Walmart tanks that I wear backwards under a lot of things. It gives a sort of boatneck look thatI like. I also bought up a ton of snug-fitting Miley Cyrus brand camis from there a couple years ago and converted them to nursing camis by cutting off the straps and adding swimsuit hooks to attach to my bra cups. They keep my belly covered while nursing and stay higher up on my bust than they would with the straps in use.
Love the idea of the cut off t-shirt bottom to make shirts longer. I usually put a long, stretchy cami under my shorter shirts, but the ones I have are a polyester blend and too hot in the summer.
Great post!
About your hair – my daughter Lindsay’s hair is doing the same thing. She doesn’t color it at all and is in the sun somewhat but this year it’s really gotten light. She uses baking soda to wash her hair and we wondered if that could be it? It looks good on her, she was very blond as a kid! Yours looks great too!
You each look so fresh and cute, thanks for sharing with me.
Your hair looks good! Love Faith’s outfit!
Tanks are always too low for me, too. Try wearing them backwards…it works!!!
You girls look great! My trick is too also turn the tank tops around if they are low. I also buy tanks tops in the men’s section. Fruit of the Loom sells them in packages of 3 or 4 ~ they are not low cut at all, and I’m a busty gal. I get mine at Target in white, grey, and black. Lisa, your legs are beautiful! Mine are just as white and I could care less. I won’t use self tanners due to the chemicals ~ just don’t want that sitting on my skin.
If you’re looking for something really natural to use as a sunblock I’ve been told recently that coconut oil works. I haven’t tried it yet, but plan to. As an added bonus, it smells great, and is a wonderful moisturizer! 🙂 I suffer from white-leg syndrome myself. LOL
I love all of your daughter’s outfits! So cute! And I chuckled when I read that avoiding death is important to you
Thank you for posting these ideas, I am always trying to teach people these simple things. Since you wrote about it I can just refer them to your website! 🙂
