Embracing Modesty, No. 21

Well friends, it’s almost June and that means trying to find ways to be modest while not dying of a heat stroke.  I am telling you I do not like to be hot.  If I start to sweat I want to find the nearest freezer and stick my head in.  I can’t even think of how much ice I go through during these Texas summers.

As it gets deeper into the summer you will see us dress more and more cool.  But you won’t see us uncovering ourselves.  It’s a matter of priorities.  For us it’s modesty first, comfort second.  But we do just fine.  You just have to keep your eye out for the right kinds of clothing.

This past week we’re still not too hot, so it’s been easy to be comfortable.  It’s been rainy and overcast so we haven’t had to be too careful about staying cool.

Patience wore this adorable skirt that I got at Sam’s Club last week.  It was only $9.90 and it’s really lightweight and cool.  The yellow top she is wearing is very thin but still pretty.  Perfect for summer.  She can put it over a tank when the weather gets hotter.

Here I have on a very light jacket over a tank top.  The tank keeps me cool and the light jacket covers that side view that is a little too exposing for us.  The green tank is too low cut for me so I wear a very lightweight tank under that. As it gets hotter I will ditch the green tank and just wear the white.  It’s too many layers for the middle of summer, but fine for now.

A lot of you have asked what we wear for sports or working outside or times when we have to be active.  This past week Hope did a bunch of work outside so she put on this cute outfit so she didn’t have to worry about bending over.  It’s a pair of jeans under a short dress.  I think she looks super cute!  But we wouldn’t wear this out in public.  That’s just our preference.  We like to have our legs more covered than that when we’re out.

We got the jeans and the short dress at Target.  You have to sort through the overly tight things there, but it’s worth the search.

Lastly here’s Grace.  She must have been in a vintage mood this day because she’s got a whole 50’s vine going on.  It’s such a delight to see this cuteness around the house all day!

I’m looking forward to the lazy days of summer.  But I am not looking forward to the scorching temperatures.  Trust me when I tell you no one wants to be cooler than me.  I will be showing you ways we try to keep cool and what we wear to avoid death.

  1. Lovely ways to keep it cool and modest in the summer time Lisa! Thank you for teaching you girls how to be modest as well as cute and fashionable! My husband hates summer with a passion – not because of the heat, but because of the immodesty. As our son is growing up and becoming more aware of girls, we are training him to guard his heart by training his eyes. I was wondering if you have any tips about that subject that would be helpful? Our pastor once said that historically, the more godless a society becomes, the more the standard of dress declines. The level of public nakedness we are currently seeing reflects the spiritual condition of our nation.

  2. I appreciate very much your desire to dress modestly. It’s a rare quality, indeed! I think part of modesty for females, also entails retaining femininity. That should be obvious, but it doesn’t take long to notice that the majority of females today, from youth to the elderly, have become very masculinized, and it’s not attractive! (When a wife matches her husband, from her haircut down to her dockers, something’s wrong with picture! haha!) Thank you to you and your daughters for embracing your femininity, and for demonstrating that with a bit of ingenuity, it is possible to dress modestly today, without looking frumpy. 🙂 Y’all have class! 🙂

  3. All y’all’s outfits are so pretty!! I have loved reading all of the Embracing Modesty posts! I like that y’all all have a different style, it reminds me of how my sisters and I am.

I missed seeing you at Bookfair this year. 🙁 hope y’all are doing well! 🙂

  4. Yay for a post regarding heat and clothing! I’m in Southern California, and we get brutal heat. (thank the Lord we don’t get humidity too! Ick!) I’ve been trying to figure out what I can wear that is comfortable and modest, and I love seeing the pictures of what you and your girls wear! It really helps me to look at my closet differently and match things together that I hadn’t matched before. It’s the next best thing to having ya’all over and go through it all with me! ^_^

  5. I love this series! It’s fun and inspiring to see the cute outfits y’all put together!

My 3yo Gracie will often put a skirt on under her dress. I’m not sure if she is tall for her age or dresses are too short (probably both!). She did this yesterday, putting a denim skirt (about calf length) under a blue dress from Target (just above her knee). She told a friend of mine at our weekly ladies’ prayer group, “I have to cover my underwear!” It was actually a cute look!

  6. I like to wear (modest!) dresses during the hot days of summer, preferably ones with no belt. A tie is okay because you can tie it loosely. Waistbands get kind of sweaty in our humid heat, and I love the breeziness of dresses in summer!

  7. Always love the the cute outfits you post!! I’ll have to check out Sam’s! That’s a really cute skirt!!

    Have a wonderful weekend!!

  8. Thank you for sharing! It’s tough to find cool, modest clothing when everything out there is too short and too tight!. I love modesty! and I enjoyed this post! Thank you

  9. I love the bright colors Patience is wearing, but WOW did Grace pull off the vintage look so well in this outfit! So beautiful! And Mrs. Pennington, you look pretty in green. 🙂

  10. Thanks, I needed this. I’m at that Season of Life when it’s not just the Summer Heat that gets to me. I’m finding it challenging these days to put together outfits that are cool, comfortable AND modest. Your series has really be a blessing!
