How Many Licks Does it Take?

Being a chocoholic who is constantly on a diet, it’s a struggle to find anything to satisfy my craving without too many calories. A few years ago I discovered that Tootsie Roll Pops only have 60 calories and because they last so long it feels like I’ve had a treat. I carry them in the car and keep a jar of them around . . . you know . . . for emergencies.

Every single time I eat one, James (aka Mr. Commercial Jingle and TV theme song expert) starts saying (in a wise owl’s voice), “How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll Center of a Tootsie Pop? Ah-one. Ah-two. Ah-three (be sure to roll your R’s while you read this last part). Ah-THREE.”

It always takes me back to the early 70s when I watched the TV commercial and wondered if I could figure it out. Just how many licks DOES it take? I decided to see if my boys wanted to take the challenge, to see if they could count how many licks it would take to get to the center. What do you think Adam? Wanna try?

How about Elijah? What flavor will he choose to eat while he licks? (Raspberry is my favorite, but they’ve got some new flavors I’m dying to try, like Pomegranate!)

Let the battle begin….

Like the wise old owl from the classic commercial, they couldn’t wait. Everyone took a bite before they licked all the way to the center. Move over boys, let the expert show you how it’s done.

Laying around outside with a Tootsie Roll Pop and a book takes me back to the horse-drawn carriage days of my youth.

Did you know that Tootsie Rolls date all the way back to 1896? Even *I* can’t remember back that far. But alas, I couldn’t wait either. I caved and bit into my pop long before I reached the middle.

This month there’s an exciting video contest you can enter answering the question, “How Many Licks Does it Take to Get to the Center of a Tootsie Pop?” If your family likes to make videos, you should do it too! Just go to the Tootsie Roll or Tootsie Pop Facebook fan page, “Like” them and follow the instructions under “How Many Licks” contest, it runs from October 1st at 2:00 a.m. PT and ends on October 25th at 11:30 p.m. PT.

  2. 273….okay – that’s a guesstimate – I never make it that far. No matter how hard I try I am a cruncher….

    Since you have an “in” with the Tootsie Pop peeps – could you pretty please request they may Tootsie Pops with the vanilla tootsie roll in the middle?? YUMMY! 🙂

  4. I love Tootsie Pops. I also find them to be a very satisfying treat when you need a sugar fix. What a fun post, and such great pictures. I think I need a sucker now.
