31 Everyday Ways to Connect with Your Child, Day 20: Love Notes

I just adore doing personal, sweet things with my kids.  With so many children at home, I look for ways to make them each feel special.  We’ve discussed so many great ideas already in this series, but this one is for making a one on one connection.

There’s nothing like a hand written note to make you feel loved.

Don’t you just delight when a letter or card comes for you in the mail?  A friend writes to say she misses you or a thank you note for a gift can make my day!  You can do the same thing for your kids.  Let each child make some kind of mailbox.  It can be a shoe box covered in construction paper, a little bucket, even a toilet paper tube they decorate with crayons.  Then start leaving them little notes inside.

Your notes can be anything from, “I LOVE YOU!” to a long, thoughtful letter.  You can even just draw a heart on a sticky note and leave it.  If you notice someone is having a particularly rough day you can leave a note of encouragement.  “I’m so sorry you’re having a hard day.  I am praying for you!  If there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know!”

If you don’t want to make a mailbox, just leave them in their books, on their pillow, under their plate.

A simple, personal, hand-written note is a great way to make a special connection with your child.

Have you ever left love notes for your kids?

  1. It’s a great thing to do! We have a couple of mirrors in our bathroom, so my 10-year-old daughter and I use a dry-erase marker to write notes to eachother. I usually put reasons I’m proud of her, and sometimes it’s a reminder to do something that morning or something I know will make her laugh, but it always says “I love you”. This is one of those little things that can really put a smile on her face – and I think it can work for everyone! =)

  2. Love this! So sweet. I do notes for my kids if they spend the night with someone. My daughter actually asks to have one when she gets back because she loves them so much;) This would be a great thing to do more often!
