31 Everyday Ways to Connect with Your Child, Day 2: The Power of Prayer

Before we really dig into some fun and easy ideas for connecting with your child, we have to start at the beginning.  Prayer.

If you only try one of the suggestions from this whole series, let it be this one.  Pray for your children and pray WITH your children.

Be sure to pray for your children every day! via The Pennington Point #parenting

When I first wake up every morning I whisper a quick prayer, “Lord, help me be what You need today to help these wonderful kids draw closer to You.”  Then I pray for each child individually….very quickly, it doesn’t take long.  And I’ll tell you the absolute truth here so you don’t picture me kneeling next to my bed in some dreamy ideal of a mother praying for her children.  Often times, because my old lady bladder can’t make it more than a few minutes after I wake up, I pray while I am going to the bathroom.  It’s OK.  God can still hear me.

Then, sometime during the day look for an opportunity to pray with your children.  If they are having a problem you can say, “Let’s pray.”  If you are disciplining them, pray together.  It just has to be a little prayer.  Don’t worry about big words and phrases like, “hedge of protection,” or “multitude of sins.”  Just talk to God.  Just for a minute.  It’s not supposed to be a lesson for the child.  It’s just so they actually hear you talking the God on their behalf.

This one little thing will build a trust that your child needs to know they can trust you in the future.

  1. Fabulous!! My 14-month-old won’t understand what I’m saying, but it sure is a great thing to start the habit now! 🙂

  2. Glad I’m not the only one who has prayed in the bathroom! Sometimes it’s the only alone time I have.

  3. ” It’s OK. God can still hear me.”
YES! so glad to hear another mom confirm this. I get polite smiles from young moms when I tell them this. Or big-as-saucer-eyes that stare.
    thanks for the encouragement!

  4. SO great! I homeschool and usually pray with my kiddos during the day some time and my hubby prays with them at bedtime. I usually think about praying with them when we are in the car on the way out the neighborhood to go somewhere. I usually pray then and ask them to pray. It’s so important!

  5. Hey! I love this series, thank you so much for taking the time to put it all together! Do you perchance have each of the suggestions in text-only form? I wanted to put it all together in one place for easy reference (it’s pretty time-consuming to click from one post to another!), but when I copy-and-paste, it comes out in strange sizes and colors. If you can’t help, no problem! Just thought it was worth asking. 🙂
