Shopping and a Great Party Recipe
I’m going out today to pick up what we need this weekend for the Christmas party we are co-hosting. Sara and I invited some of our besties to a Minute to Win it party on Saturday night. We’ll be balancing cups and tossing ornaments around and general mayhem will ensue.
Today I’ll hit the dollar store, the super store and some small, local shops and hopefully find everything I need. I just want to insert here that if this tiny town had a Target and a Chick-fil-A my life would be complete.
While I do love to shop, I really don’t enjoy it during the holiday season. I am not into the whole Santa, cheap gifts, low quality commercialism that Christmas has become. And don’t get me started on the Salvation Army bell ringers. They drive me BANANAS!!! The sound of their bell bores right into my brain and gives me an instant migraine. Yes, I am a delight to hang out with. My constant complaining and general grumpiness brings joy to everyone I meet.
What I love about Christmas is the coziness and the fellowship of friends and family. I love the chill in the air and baking with my girls and singing silly songs with the family. Being with each other and enjoying the moments.
That’s what our party will be about….being together. Being together with Vaseline rubbed on our noses while we see if we can get a pom pom to stick to it. That, my friends, is the real meaning of Christmas.
I’m also picking up ingredients for the punch and other festive, holiday goodies to serve our party guests. My mom makes the most delicious Onion Ham Rolls and I am going to make these for sure! Want the recipe? Here you go (Mom, do you mind if I share the recipe?)
Lisa’s Mom’s Onion Ham Rolls
Mix together mustard and melted butter to desired taste (Mom’s never been big on measuring) and add chopped onions (I like to chop them very small so the kids don’t know they are in there). Slice onion rolls and spread the butter mixture on each half then layer with a good honey ham and mozzarella cheese. Wrap sandwiches individually in foil and heat in oven until warm.
That’s it folks! Easy and SO yummy! I’m not generally a mustard or onion girl, but I could eat these until I was stuffed then eat a few more.
For the punch I always serve our favorite, ginger ale mixed with Pineapple juice. Gina tells me that it is good with orange juice mixed in. So I might add some of that just to keep things interesting.
We’ll also be serving Grace’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies. I don’t know how she does it. It’s the same recipe I’ve always used, but somehow she makes them taste so much better. Well you saw them in my buckets, irresistable.
How about you? Have any shopping to do this week?
Just got a couple of things left to get, finally think I know what I am getting for the little boys, but I am sure after I think its all done, I will remember someone else I need to get a present for!
Another idea for a yummy, frothy punch is sherbet and Sprite/Sierra Mist/7-Up. My mom has always used lime sherbet and Sprite, but you could substitute any flavor sherbet that you like. It foams up and once the sherbet starts melting it’s really good! Hope your party goes well!
We also like a punch where you buy a juice made by Welch’s (I think) that is a strawberry flavored juice, which we freeze into ice cubes. You put the ice cubes into a cup and then poor Sprite/ginger ale/Sierra Mist over it and it makes a pretty pink punch, self-serve style. Hate I’ll miss the Vaseline on the nose, though. Sounds like ya’ll will have lots of Christmas fun!
LOVE the minute-to-win-it game. So glad I saw it on your Pin Boards!
Have to say, I love the Salvation Army bell ringers 🙂 My grandparents were retired SA-officers, so are my aunt and uncle. My mom was one as well. My husband rang bells for them his freshman and sophomore years of college. It is also biggest fundraiser of the year; for local “chapters” it’s the source of monies for the whole year. To me, the bell is a happy sound announcing Christmas (despite the fact that there are ornaments in the stores as early as July (Halllmark) ) There you go! We’re opposites, here I guess 🙂
