Doodlebug’s Room
I’m home and ready to tell you all about our room makeover projects from the weekend at Gina’s cottage. There is so much to tell that we’ve broken it into parts. Today I am excited to show you a little bit of what we did in one of the rooms.
Gina’s youngest daughter, Doodlebug, wanted a pink room with bright colors. On the wall opposite the bed we put bookshelves flanking a little desk. Mr. SCC built the shelves and I painted the desk with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I had really been wanting to try this paint. I’ve been reading about it, so I was thrilled when Gina told me she’d save that task for me. I absolutely loved the paint. It is different than any paint I’ve ever used and I will definitely order some for myself.
My main job in this room was creating the grid on the wall behind the bed. Cha Cha’s husband and I worked on it together. After the walls were painted and some careful measuring we added 1×4 boards vertically and horizontally.
We glued and nailed them up then caulked the whole thing. A little paint touch up and it was ready to accessorize.
Cha Cha’s husband cut MDF to fit in the spaces then we used those in various ways. Cha Cha and Angie covered two of them to use as a message board.
Gina painted two of them with black chalkboard paint.
In one square Cha Cha’s husband cut down a bit of an old bulletin board to fit and I painted it.
I painted the very bottom squares with paint left over from another room….just to give it more of a headboard look.
There was one square left to be filled, so I decided to make a little doodlebug to match the one on her monogrammed pillow. I found some scrapbook paper and sketched a little bug. Then I cut out pieces, glued them together and used a Sharpie to outline the pieces and dots. I wanted to make the spots with some of the gingham fabric from her pillow, so I used Modge Podge to glue the fabric to a piece of cardstock, traced circles on the back and cut them out. After I glued the bug to the wall I used the Sharpie to add the antennas and little trail.
All in all the headboard wall turned out to be one of my favorite projects of the weekend.
Head over to Gina’s, Cha Cha’s, Leslie’s, Angie’s and Polly’s to see more of Doodlebug’s room.
That is one cute room! Love the grid “headboard.” Very clever use of space. The colors are wonderful too!

Ladies, Miss Lisa TOTALLY rocked! She is super-duper talented and a wiz at each project she did. And she can sing beautifully!
That wall IS my absolute favorite project in the makeovers this weekend.
So glad I got to work with you. I hope we can do it again.
Lisa! I can not believe all the projects you guys did in one weekend!, this headboard wall is pure genius. How on earth did all you talented ladies decide to get together and do this? Was there a lot of behind the scenes planning going on months in advance or did you just brainstorm when you got there and come up with all this? When are you going to try out for Design Star? You could totally win that!
Hey Lisa! Great to meet you today! I just had to share with you how ADORABLE this room is and that my daughter, Nova, has a nickname… and its DOODLEBUG! Can’t wait to show her this cute room tomorrow (she is zonked out from the convention today!)– Mykal
