Mother of the Year
I don’t know about you all, but I am so glad to be getting back to normal around here. The holidays really cut into my diet and school….doesn’t happen.
I made the announcement yesterday, “Everyone is expected to be up by 7:am tomorrow and ready for school by 9 with chores finished.” This morning, bright and early, only one person was missing from the table.
Me.
It’s really pathetic isn’t it? When Mom puts her foot down and then sleeps through the alarm clock. I blame the new OWN network. I spent Sunday night watching it. Really, it’s hard to resist a show that takes hoarders and makes them happy, de-cluttered people. And don’t get me started on the Oprah behind-the-scenes shows. I’ve always been fascinated with how they make TV shows. Just writing this makes me realize why James and I are so perfect for each other. I am fascinated with TV shows and he knows every TV theme song from the 20th century. We are M-F-E-O.
Despite my laziness we did get school done today plus I managed to get all five boys’ hair cut. They were beginning to look like no one cares about them. The poor little boys down the street that have long hair and dirty fingernails. Their mother is still asleep at 8:00 in the morning. It’s sad.
I only have three days of school this week and then we turn into flower central. We are doing all of the flowers for our friend’s wedding this weekend. I keep wondering why I took this job considering I have never done flowers like this before. What kind of idiot agrees to make all of the bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres (yes, I had to look up how to spell that) for a WEDDING?!
How do I get myself into these situations? I have nothing to prove, except that I love my friends and want to help them have a gorgeous wedding on a budget. Plus I have four daughters and may need help with their weddings someday. Points in the bank are good….very good.
I wonder if the OWN network has any shows about flower arranging. That would help me.
And now it is midnight and I am still up. My plan to be up tomorrow morning before the kids and prove I am a responsible mother is looking bleak.
LOL that is so funny Lisa! So glad its summer school holidays around here- I get cranky though as I think all the holidays cut into my holiday and we never get a real break, before I know it it will be the end of January and term 1 will be starting- I sometimes wish we had Christmas in July in the southern hemisphere and have a long summer vacation like you do in the US we only get 6 weeks and in that is Christmas, New Year and Australia Day, as well as Levi’s birthday on the 10th Jan. I sound like a real whinger don’t I???
Hope your flowers turn out beautifully as I am sure they will!
Ya know, some of the websites I visit written by moms make me feel just slightly, sort of inferior. In all ways.
Yours. however? It makes me feel like someone else truly understands the real reality of life! And the humor of life. And the messiness, not-always-perfectness of life.
And for that, I thank you. (I also learned how to spell boutonnieres which made me very happy.)

Oh, you will do fine with the wedding flowers! I have done several weddings, using real and silk flowers…you can do it!
That’s too funny! I have no great aim to get my kids up at a respectable hour. Because, it never fails, IF I manage to get up early (and that’s a big IF), I enjoy the quiet so much that I refuse to get my children up. They sleep so peacefully.
Then there are days like today when my children wake up before I do and the whole day is shot. Ok, not exactly. We’ll still get it all done. Who says we need to be up at the crack of dawn anyway?
First I am thinking M F E O stands for Made For Each Other. I hope.
Second, SO ENVIOUS. Would love to watch the new OWN channel alas no cable. 🙁
Keep me posted on the good shows. 🙂
Funny, I am sitting on the compruter while my girls are doing school work, hope the don’t need me and keep me from doing my important work. You will do great at the flowers, I have don’t them for weddings and it is pretty straight forward. Good luck and have fun with it.

dear Putting Flowers in the bank,
Smart move! You sound like me….”We are SO getting an early start tomorrow….” and then what happens? Well, I usually do get up, but it is often like someone who already commented: I love the quiet so much….I let too much time pass before ‘cracking the whip’ about getting up.
Enjoy working with the flowers. I am sure they will be just right.
love,
Flowers, real and otherwise

I’m glad you put your foot down! As for me, I lost my mother of the year award on day 2 of 2011. Do they have quarterly awards? That way we’d have a chance to start over a few times a year!
My China boys hair is driving me crazy–trying to grow out the buzz. Seems malnourishment leaves one with extremly thin hair, so we’re hoping it will look better a little longer.
Speaking of school, I was wondering what kinds of posts you’ve done on homeschooling at your house. Have you written anything on the topic? I’m a bit slow, but I can’t figure out how to search your blog!
Anyway, I am the WORST early rising mother that ever existed. Something I want to work on. Are you a morning person? I never have been. Ever. I’ll take any advice that ANYone has on how to get up early, lol!
Love and totally relate to this sentence…. “Really, it’s hard to resist a show that takes hoarders and makes them happy, de-cluttered people.”
Have fun with those flowers – don’t forget the pictures please! 🙂
