A Quiet Weekend

I am off for a weekend of quiet and reflection.  A friend invited me to join her on a retreat weekend to a place called “The Quiet House.”  By the name, it sounds pretty much exactly like my house every day.

This is serious business: no phones, no internet, no motor cars, not a single luxury.

I won’t have any contact with the outside world for two days.  I’m not really sure how I feel about this.  I like being connected.  I like the noise my kids make.  I like flipping on the TV and watching my recordings of “The Nate Berkus Show” and “The Amazing Race.”  Can I actually go a whole weekend without HGTV?

Books, I need books. Lots and lots of books.

I did download a whole bunch of music that you all suggested.  I’ve got some Selah, Steve Fee, Gordon Mote, Phillips, Tree63, Bebo Norman, Brooke Barrettsmith and Dave Williford.  I know….I have a bit of a split personality.  I prefer to think of it as “well rounded”.  I am well rounded alright, very round.

I know that many of you will leave me comments saying how much you would love a weekend in the woods with your thoughts.  But for me, I’d rather hang out on the porch with my kids and wash the car and get things done.  I’m not good at stillness.

So off I go.  I will be back up and running on Monday.  Well, not running.  I don’t run.  More like up and strolling.  OK, sitting.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend.  Enjoy your people.  Enjoy your Internet.  Enjoy your own bed.

I miss my kids already!  And James….oh yes, I miss him terribly!

Being a librarian, I have to give you some book suggestions for your weekend…if you like Christian Fiction, I have no idea but looking at how those books fly off the shelf, I don’t think you can go wrong.

I like literary fiction so here are a few of my recent favorites:
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (new author)
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (much better than the movie, I promise)
Memory Wall by Anthony Doerr (short stories all touching on the subject of memory)

Let me know if you need more, that should cover two days.
    Love, Laura

  2. Obligatory comment: Oh yes I would LOVE a weekend away in the quiet!! Now that we have that out of the way since you are with a girlfriend it can’t be a fully quiet weekend can it??

    Have a great time!!

    Hugs,
    🙂 Heather

  3. Oh the Quiet House is awesome!! As a matter of fact, Haven just brought it up the other day. Kids remember the oddest things at the most random times.

  4. A quiet weekend away with a girlfriend away sounds like fun, but I know that I would miss my 2 kiddos (& hubby!) in about 2 minutes! And I agree with Heather – how quiet can it actually be?????

    Hope you enjoyed it!!
