The Perfect Bedroom for a Hipster

Has it really been 7 months since our house fire?!  In some ways it seems like yesterday and other times I wonder if it was all a dream.  We are so close to having the whole house finished, but there are bits and pieces left to wrap up.  Plus when the fire started I was just starting a minor kitchen remodel and it’s about time I got back to that.

I’ve already shown you the attic Harry Potter bedroom and the boys’ bathroom.  Those were on the major damage side of the house.  But the side that was all smoke damage and not actual fire has also been made over.  Why not when we had to empty it and repaint and replace all bedding and window coverings anyway?

We have been really careful what we bring back into the house.  If an item wasn’t serving us we just got rid of it.  For example, I got rid of decor I never use anymore and clothes that don’t fit and things I’d been planning to sell on ebay 10 tears ago.  Now the house is all organized with only what we actually use!  It’s one of my favorite blessings that happened from the fire.

One room that I just love now is my 21 year old daughter’s bedroom.  We redid it from top to bottom even though she will be moving out in November, since she’s getting married.  So I bought some of the furniture for future use as a guest room and she bought some of it to take with her.  It’s so cute and really hits her personal style on the nose.

She’s a hipster for sure.  She doesn’t love that label because it doesn’t cover all of her passions.  But come on….she loves small coffee shops, guitars, airstreams, hand lettering, cactus, shopping at Goodwill and traveling to Africa to help people.  She also loves Jesus and she always smells like essential oils so ummmmm…..label her a Christian hipster.

This used to be half of a double room my girls shared and it has french doors leading into it with glass in it.  There was a curtain on it, but after the fire we needed to find another way to cover the door and we wanted something that was simple and not as cumbersome as curtains.  So we cut up a white flat sheet and attached it to the windows with a paste of cornstarch + water.  I’m not kidding…..it looks amazing!  Like frosted glass.

The window coverings we used are one of my favorite new things in the house!  I got them at blinds.com and they are the perfect option for this room!  It’s a west facing room so it gets too much sun in the afternoons.  We needed room darkening and simple and easy to operate.  I found these accordion blinds that raise and lower from either the bottom OR top and I knew that’s just what we needed!  That way she can let some sun in during the afternoon without letting in so much heat.  Plus since she’s right off the back patio and we all walk past her room all day long she can have more privacy and still have the sunlight coming in!

Her bed is from Wayfare.  I got all of our beds from there and have been really pleased with them!

The bedding is from various places….just wherever she found things along the way.  The little end tables are file cabinets from IKEA.  They give her more storage for all of her art supplies and flower crowns and rubber bands for her top knots.  (just kidding….kind of)

She does really love her Young Living oils tho!  She uses them daily and shares them generously with her friends and it’s part of her business.  If you want to join Young Living with a young, creative, caring person then you should sign up with her and get your Premium Starter Kit and she’ll tell you how to use oils for getting married and travel and church and being a great friend.  She really is the best!!!

Her little desk is from Hobby Lobby.  It will be a great desk, side table, whatever she needs, for her new apartment after she gets married.

I am enjoying this little room for the next few months then it will all change.  She will take half the furniture with her and I am planning to claim the room as an office for myself and move the bed to another room for guests.  So stay tuned for the updated version after November!

Happy September!
