Tiny Bathroom with Big Impact

Last week I showed you the upstairs boys’ bedroom (where the fire happened) and this week I’m revealing their bathroom.  It’s at the bottom of the stairs that lead to their attic bedroom and it’s been completely redone.

Before the fire we had a pre-fab shower in there that we had just (I mean just the week before!) taken apart and cleaned and recaulked and gotten it spiffy again.  And the floor in the bathroom was painted concrete.  The fire got soot on the shower that no one could get off and the floors were ruined by the firefighters going through there and the vanity was damaged…all in all it was a mess!

The little bathroom got kind of lost in the recovery process and we just got it finished last week and it’s already back in business.  The boys who share this bathroom are thrilled to have a clean, easy space to use and they’re especially glad not to have to share a bathroom with sisters anymore!

I love how bright and cheerful it is!  When we added this room onto the house I put a door to the backyard in it.  I wanted a bathroom the kids to be able to use from outside without going through the house.  It’s been a gift!

Of course I had to use my Cricut to make some fun letters for the wall!  What I love about it is it’s an inexpensive way to add design that’s easy to replace if (or should I say when) it gets messed up.  Boys’ bathrooms are not safe places for fragile art.

And the window blinds are from my peeps at blinds.com.  We leave them tilted open when it’s not in use and one pull on the tilt cord lets anyone outside that the bathroom is occupied.

Over the toilet I cleaned up the boxes that were there before the fire (since they’re metal I could save them).  They are old napkin dispensers that I found at a thrift store and hung upside down to create shelves.

It’s a great place to keep extra toilet paper, hand towels and the Young Living oils that the boys like to use.  I just put all the oils in the kit there for them.  I keep a diffuser in this bathroom because….um….well you have boys, right?

The new shower is my favorite part of the room.

I am in love!  We intended to replace the shower with the same one that was there before, but they don’t make those anymore (at least that shape and size).  So we had one built and it’s so pretty! I’ve given the boys a bunch of lessons on how to keep it clean.  We’ll see if that actually happens.

The shelves built into the wall give this tiny shower that little extra space.  The guy we hired said he usually does just one shelf, but with all these boys he thought we needed two.  Thanks!!!

By the way, that black soap is our new family favorite!  Its the Young Living Charcoal soap and it smells amazing and charcoal is great for eliminating odors. {ahem}  My 11 year old only wants to use the kid shampoo and body wash and I’m happy to supply it for him.  I think the older boys use it too, although no teen will admit to using kid shampoo.

On the opposite wall is a shelf I built last year that survived the fire.  It fits right between the two doors and gives us some extra storage.  Across the top I added one long shelf to hold baskets with all of our mismatched towels (we call them “junky towels”).

I still need to add hooks on the right for the boys to hang their towels after showering.

I found an old metal box to hold bandaids and Thieves Spray for those boy needs.

The corner has a towel holder I built with an old frame and spindles.  Each boy has his own towel, plus a few extra on the shelf for guests.  I can’t find Levi’s towel so he must be drip drying these days.

I used boxes from Hobby Lobby for the lower 3 shelves creating personal storage for each boy. They originally had the handles on the sides, but we moved them to the front.  Those boxes are for their own things like razors, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, etc.

I didn’t mention the floor, but that was replaced since the painted floor got all scratched up.  We just used wood laminate.  It’s easy and affordable.

Thanks for hanging with me on this grand tour of a small room.  It’s hard to find ways to add storage and décor to a tiny room that is being used by 3 boys, but I think we did pretty well!

Be sure to come back next week for another post-fire room reveal!

Here’s the Harry Potter Boys’ Bedroom I showed you last week!
