Bathroom Update and a GREAT Giveaway!

This week the kids and I are making over the boys’ bathroom.  It may still smell bad every day, but at least it will be cute.

One of the big changes I wanted to make is the storage problem.  I got some cheap boards at the hardware store to build  shelves that would fit the space perfectly.  You get a lot more storage when your shelf actually fills the space.

On Monday morning the boys and I worked outside in the heat and built exactly what we need.  We measured and cut drilled and got the shelf finished and ready to caulk and paint first thing the next morning.

On Tuesday we got some school done then we went out to paint our beautiful shelf.  I was really excited to use my new Heavy Duty Paint Sprayer from HomeRight.

Adam helped me set the shelf up on blocks and in about 10 minutes the whole shelf was painted.  Done!  Bam!  And no brush stokes….a very professional looking finish!

(Yes, those are my workout clothes that I never changed out of the whole day, what about it?)

I wondered if the cleanup would take long, but it didn’t.  It took just a few minutes and we were done.  The only thing I would want you to know is it took more paint than it would have if we were brushing it on.  But I didn’t care one bit.  We were going to have plenty of extra paint so that was no problem and the time savings was completely worth it!

We are still working in the room and haven’t styled the shelf, but here’s a sneak peek…..

We still have lots left to do to finish the bathroom, but we should be finished by Friday.  We may have a party in there.  Who cares if it’s small?  It will be cute.  And clean!

And guess what?!?!  You’re going to love this.  The super nice folks at HomeRight are going to give one of YOU a paint sprayer for your very own!  Oh yes….we are definitely having a party now!

  1. Now you make using that sprayer so easy. Sounds like fun rather than a tangled mess 🙂 Enjoying your progress!

    ~Cinnamon

    1. Cinnamon, I was really surprised at how easy it was. I hope you entered the giveaway so you can find out for yourself. 🙂 Lisa~

  2. I have a construction question. Why do the shelves extend all the way through the sides? I understand they are fixed. Is it for strength? Thank you.

    1. Hi Pam! I couldn’t figure out what you meant until I stared at it for a few minutes. Then I realized that it does kind of look that way! The shelves don’t extend through the sides. I just did my own thing with the trim and wrapped it across the front of each shelf and around the sides. That’s just the trim you see on the sides. It’s easier to tell in real life.

I’ll bet you’re not the only person that thinks that….I will try to get some better pictures for you! Lisa~

  3. I have been thinking of getting a paint sprayer, but always thought they were complicated. You make it look so easy!

  4. I have never used one, but I bet it would make some of mud projects much easier! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

    1. Hi Leslie! It sure did make painting that shelf easier. I plan to use it again next weekend to do some of the outdoor furniture. Thanks, Lisa~

  5. I have never used a spray painter, but sure would love the opportunity to try!!!!

Thank you for being such an inspiration in so many ways!!!!!!!

  6. I have not used a paint sprayer before, but I’m thinking I need to. 🙂 We moved into this house a year ago and have plenty of projects needing to be done; many of which involve paint.

    1. Shanee, that counts! I love spray paint….and this makes it even better because you can use any color you want. I lined up a bunch of other things to paint when I did the shelf. It was awesome! Lisa~

  7. Lisa

I love what you are doing to the bathroom. Can’t wait to see the finished project. I stumbled across your site last week, when my daughter was looking for modest clothing on Pinterest. Love your blog. Funny thing, my maiden name is Pennington. Small world.

    1. Hi Sibyl….I am so glad you stopped by! We Penningtons have to stick together! 🙂 I’ll show the finished bathroom next week with a few sneak peeks before then. There’s a lot going on considering what a tiny room it is! Lisa~

  8. I have wanted to paint my baby’s room for a long time now but am too afraid of doing it with the roller method, but haven’t been able to justify buying a paint sprayer. This would be awesome!

    1. Hi Crystal! You would be brave to use it inside…but I am sure you can since there’s an attachment for painting ceilings that is included in the box. I would love to hear how that goes. Be sure to cover over everything you don’t want painted. 🙂 Lisa~

    1. Jen, really? Are you starting some paint projects? Or are you like me and there’s always something that needs painting? 😉 Lisa~

  9. Ooh, I’ve never used a paint sprayer, but this makes all my redo projects look less daunting!

    1. Rebecca, I was really surprised by how easy it was! I have big plans for using it again this next weekend. Lisa~

  10. I have never used a hand sprayer but have often wished for one to make projects easier!

    1. Christina, that was me too! I always wondered if they were really a pain or hard to clean. But I was so happy with it. You’ll love it! Lisa~

  11. I never have used a paint sprayer BUT my husband and I have been putting off redoin our kitchen cabinets because it is going to be A.LOT of work. We decided we are going to tackle it the end if this month and a sprayer would be SOOO nice!
    Crossing my fingers!!

    1. Oh my goodness Laura…it would be perfect for that! The prep work would be a lot, but the painting would go so quickly and look so smooth! Great idea. Lisa~

  12. I love how you guys are always doing projects together. We do the same around here, I have 3 boys! We just moved and have been painting and redoing furniture. I love redoing furniture now, so I’m on the look out for more to do. This sprayer would make it so much more fun!

    1. Thanks Patricia! It’s the best way even though it does sometimes slow down the process. 🙂 You are so right….a sprayer would make your furniture projects got much faster! I can’t wait to use mine more. Thanks, Lisa~

  13. I’ve never used a paint sprayer, but the idea of not having any brush strokes is very appealing!

    1. Hannah, that was almost as wonderful as having it go so quickly! There is not one brush stroke on my shelves. It’s awesome! Lisa~

  14. Your ability to get out and DO projects like this is inspiring. Knowing a paint sprayer would make an intimidating project go faster is motivating as well.

    1. Wow thanks Krystle! It’s just a matter of being willing to sweat half to death while letting the boys do all of the heavy lifting. 🙂 But yes, the paint sprayer definitely motivated me to get it done! Lisa~

  15. I love how you just take on projects yourself! You are probably like me. Your husband is always so busy and so you figure it out for yourself! I love that!! I sure could have used this paint sprayer a month ago. I was painting my pasture fence and all the gates!

    1. Donna, you nailed that on the head! If I waited for him, even though he’s great at it too, I’d never have my shelves. He’s more than happy to let me do it and I like it…so win-win. And oh let’s not even think about how much time you would have saved painting that fence with a sprayer! Lisa~

  16. Growing up, my parents owed rental property. We utilized paint sprayers for the exterior of the homes. It worked great and saved a lot of time. As you mentioned, it did use more paint than brushing, but it was very time effective. Those homes are still in the family, and they still look great. As I posted on your Facebook, I would love to gift this to my mother-in-law. She is presently remodeling her bathroom!

    1. Kristina, that’s interesting! I’m so glad you shared about your mother. That is so sweet! Lisa~

  17. I love how your children are learning how to DIY right along side you! That’s an education that so many children miss these days. Would love to try out this paint sprayer. Thanks for hosting the give away!

    1. Hi Deb, I try to teach the kids everything I can so when they go to their own homes they will be able to do at least small repairs and DIY projects. The boys definitely liked this sprayer….it kept them from having to paint that shelf. LOL! Lisa~

  18. Wow – you always inspire me! We used a paint sprayer when we redid our whole upstairs last year when putting our house on the market. It did make things go faster but the one we had gunked up a lot. More paint as you said but a sprayer is the way to go for a nice even finish. I have a few projects swirling in my brain now that I want to start soon!

    1. Hi Jen! You’re so kind! I did dilute the paint for this project quite a bit (maybe about 20%) and that may have kept it from “gunking up”. Let’s get those projects out of your brain and into real life. LOL! Lisa~

  19. We have been updating our home to put it on the market because we are preparing to build a new home. And I LOVE DIY projects. A paint sprayer would be a dream!

  20. I would love, love, love to have a paint sprayer – and I hate to admit it, but I would also love to have you and your boys build some bookshelves for me. Ha, ha.

    1. Ha! Bridget you’re too funny! I wish I had time to come and help you….we would have a ball! Lisa~

  21. Oh, I want a paint sprayer so badly! 🙂 Thank you for a great review and giveaway! (If I win, I WILL paint my kitchen cabinets!) 🙂

    1. Thanks Monica! Spraying that shelf has made the whole project go so much quicker! I’ll be showing sneak peeks until it’s done. 🙂 Lisa~

  22. Oh, I would LOVE a sprayer! I want to paint my kitchen cabinets, but am scared to do it! I have heard that a sprayer would make it so much easier. Don’t know that this is the right kind for that, but I have plenty of spaces that could use some paint!

  23. Wow, great giveaway. I wonder if it would do thicker paints like chalkboard paint. Thanks for the chance.

  24. Nope, I’ve never used a paint sprayer. But this one looks pretty awesome. I’m sure it would be WAY better on my carpal tunnel wrist than a brush or roller! Can’t wait to see the bathroom party pictures!

  25. My daughter and I would love a pain sprayer! We’ve been busy with lots of little projects together the last year or so and this would be a great addition to our small “tool and equipment” set. Thanks for the chance!

  26. I can’t wait to see the end result! We’re building a bathroom from scratch in our attic so I’m on the hunt for inspiration! A paint sprayer would also come in quite handy!

  27. I’ve never used a sprayer, but have used brushes and rollers to paint many, many projects. When you wrote that you painted that shelf in about 10 minutes, I was shocked. Yep, I’d be willing to try one of those!

  28. My hubby got me a paint sprayer but it is painfully slow-I can brush on faster! I would love to try another one and see if I can get more done!!

  29. Great post – and so much easier than Spray paint (and less waste with all the empty cans!)

  30. I have never used a paint sprayer but I have always withed I had one. I told myself I would not try to paint my 1926 Bungalow siding again without one and it is over due for a good painting!

  31. We have used a paint sprayer before — to stain our wood fence! It saved hours of work. A storm blew our fence down earlier this year and fortunately insurance replaced it, but now it’s time to stain it again! Would love a heavy duty sprayer like this.

  32. Is the sprayer hooked up to an air compressor? How much overspray was there? A lot?

    Thanks for sharing your project.

  33. I have not used a paint sprayer yet but hope to do so in the very near future. I love the ease and the finish!

  34. I am trying to convince my husband to buy one of these for my furniture painting projects. Lets just say he is old school and said, “brushes work fine”.

  35. I’ve been wanting a HomeRight – all I’ve used is an old school air sprayer hooked up to an industrial compressor at my dad’s house. Painted some furniture and even an old car with that. I’d love something a little less “industrial” for my home projects.

  36. I have used a couple of sprayers years ago. I moving to a new home in a next week and will have plenty to paint.

  37. I’m starting a huge office desk built in project this weekend, and this would seriously come in handy when it’s time to paint!

    1. So I guess I didn’t really answer the question…I’ve used spray paint before. Does that count? Actually we bought a cheap one from Harbor Freight, had to rent a massive air compressor, and still had major problems. The Home Right sprayers look much better (and I wouldn’t have to rent an air compressor!)

  38. Oh Gosh! I need this. We are renovating an old 1905 farmhouse and there is so much that needs to be painted. This would cut the work load in half!!!

  39. I would love a paint sprayer! Especially a nice, easy to use paint sprayer! I have some furniture that I would love to paint.

  40. I have used a paint sprayer, actually more than one type, and I love them. I don’t have one now and I need it first of all to paint some louvered doors and shutters. Then on to the big time. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  41. No, I have never used a paint sprayer. But I am sure it must be faster than a brush. 🙂 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me find out!! 🙂

  42. What a great giveaway of a product that looks like a real time saver! I have never used a paint sprayer, but have been dying to try one. Would love to use it to paint the preschool where I am the director. Our little love bugs would be thrilled to see a school makeover! Thanks for making this giveaway possible!

  43. Wow! So impressed. I would love to have a paint sprayer. So many projects on my to-do list.

  44. Haven’t tried one yet but sure would love to have one. I have so many projects to get done.

  45. My daughter and son-in-law just bought a house, a “fixer-upper” and could really use this paint sprayer!

  46. I have never used a paint sprayer. I just moved into my first home a month ago and have been chomping at the bit to try one!

  47. Nope. Not me. I’m a bit more comfortable with a brush and roller. I guess I fear that the paint will end up spraying all over the place.

  48. I used one a long time ago (20+ years). Would love to win this one so I can finally paint my house (we’ve been in it 13 years and it could really use it).

  49. I have not used a paint sprayer but have seen so many wonderful projects that included using one and must confess to a little paint sprayer envy! I have a lot of projects on my to-do list that I’m sure would benefit from having one.

  50. I use a spray paint can trigger attachment all the time and love how easy it makes spray painting, so I can only assume that this sprayer would be even more awesome!

  51. I would love to win the sprayer. 10 minutes to do that shelf….incredible! You inspire me, Lisa;-)

  52. I have a very old sprayer and just moved into a new house. This would be incredibly helpful!

  53. I would LOVE a paint sprayer! It looks so much easier than the brush and roller paint jobs we’ve been doing around the house!

  54. “We may have a party in there. Who cares if it’s small? It will be cute. And clean!” I love your attitude! True success!

  55. My husband bought a paint sprayer about 5 years ago, and I think I tried it out once.

Question: Did you put molding on the sides and front of the shelves? I can tell from the first photo that the boards are being nailed in between the walls, but the other photos make it seem like they go through the walls.

  56. I have never used a paint sprayer , but I would LOVE to. First thing I think I would do would be to spray my fence 🙂

  57. I haven’t ever used a paint sprayer. I hear the paint goes on so much smoother and nicer with a sprayer. I’d love to give it a go!

  58. I have never used a paint sprayer but I would love to try.
    Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

  59. I watched my husband and son use a paint sprayer 15 years ago while building our house. They lined up all the interior oak doors and sprayed polyurethane over them all after staining them.

  60. I would love to win one of these for my husband. We are painting all of the trim in our 1939 house and have a ton of doors to do. I bet this would make it so much easier for him. Thanks for the give away Lisa!!

  61. I have not used a paint sprayer but I would love to try one. Have an adult son who would also be thrilled to borrow it. :o)

  62. I have not used one but would love to try one. A sprayer would make painting my kitchen cabinets much easier. Thanks for this giveaway 🙂

  63. I have not used a paint sprayer YET but your post could not have come at a better time! I’ve been researching one and it’s always awesome to see a product and get an honest testimonial about it. Thanks for your fabulous timing 🙂

  64. No I have never used one – if I win then I won’t be able to say that any more LOL!!

  65. I’ve used a sprayer before but really wasn’t happy with the one I used. I’m glad to hear this one sprayed well and was so easy to use, that’s great! Can’t wait to see the reveal!

  66. I have never used a paint sprayer, but would love to try. I have been seeing the Home Right sprayer all over blogs and it looks amazing!

  67. I have never used a paint sprayer. I need one though, we just moved and the whole is beige (even the ceilings). Plus I want to build shelving for a library.

  68. I have never used one, but I’ve got to paint inside and out and would love to try it.

  69. I have never used a paint sprayer, I think I am going to add it to my bucket list. I really want to use one. seriously.

  70. If you could do it, so could I! I have SO much wicker to paint….What a wonderful opportunity. Thanks for the offer!

  71. I have never used a paint sprayer, but I could use one right about now! I just bought two $5 end tables that I want to re-paint and would love to just spray them and be done.

BTW, I received my book “The Blessings Jar” in the mail this week, and we love it!!! I have 4 kiddos with another on the way, so our book will definitely be read numerous times. Thank you again for that wonderful giveaway! 🙂

  72. A paint sprayer sounds awesome! We just moved into another home and we have been adding and creating to make the house more useable and personable.

I enjoy reading your blog, especially the “Embracing Modesty” series!

  73. Oh mercy yes! I have used a paint sprayer before. Long ago back in the olden days of paint sprayers. I am so glad to hear your review of this one as it is the very one I have been looking at for a huge project I have coming up when the weather is a bit cooler…..painting all SEVENTEEN doors in my house !!! A sprayer that makes short work of it would be fantastic ! 🙂

  74. I have never used a paint sprayer, but have many projects that a paint sprayer would be just perfect for!

  75. I would LOVE this sprayer!! Our house has a stucco finish, I painted a porch section with a roller. I thought I did a pretty good job.A couple of weeks later I noticed the finish was not consistent. It looked like some really bad faux finish. I did my best to touch up but I am not very happy with it, or all the time I have spent! This magical sprayer would correct the job and do it in a flash!

  76. I haven’t used a sprayer, but it would be great to have one! My fingers don’t work well and a sprayer is easier than trying to grip a brush for long periods. Thanks for the giveaway!

  77. Thanks for the opportunity. I seem to collect projects and I’ve been wondering if something like this would make it easier to get them finished!

  78. No, I haven’t used a sprayer but my husband paints for a living and we would get so much use out of it!

  79. I have never used a paint sprayer. My dad always told me they didn’t work. Maybe this was because it was his money I was wanting to use to purchase one. Lol. Thanks for the great giveaway 🙂

  80. I’ve never used a paint sprayer but if it’s as quick and easy as you make it sound, I’d love to use one! I just finished refinishing a hutch and was about ready to tear our my hair due to brush strokes and globby paint. It took w a y t o o l o n g to get it all done but I did it! =)

If you ever visit N. Idaho, come on by. I’d love to have some of your creative help with all the projects that swim around in my head! =)
