Embracing Modesty, No 26

I love a good mix-n-match style!  Dresses are nice, but skirts and tops make it easy to change it up and be spontaneous.  I can easily tailor them to my mood, which is never predictable.

My girls do the same thing.  They definitely got that from me….wearing something new and fun everyday.  Unlike their father and brothers who tend to wear the same shirt for 4 days or until someone tells them it needs to be washed.  We girls, on the other hand, don’t wear the same thing for weeks if we can help it.  And it just takes a few, simple pieces.

Since we try to keep our wardrobes at a manageable size, we often just make a small, but significant change to the outfit.  Here are some examples…

Patience has on a cute yellow and gray striped tank over a blue T and denim skirt.  With, of course, her high tops.

But here she is wearing the same tank and high tops with a white, puffed sleeved, collared top and white skirt.  It’s all cool and comfy, but a totally different look.

The little black flower and earrings from their etsy shop finish it off so nicely.

Faith loves this anthropologie top that she got on double clearance, so she mixes it up and wears it pretty often.  She looks so sweet in these muted colors.

But then she’ll wear the same top with a red waistband (she cuts these from old t-shirts) and denim skirt and it looks different.

And in this last picture she’s wearing the same white skirt from above with the red waist band and a different top….mixin’ it up is what it’s all about!

The girls are also really good about doing their hair all different ways and adding fun accessories to make an outfit unique.  Have fun with your wardrobe!  See if something you always wear together can be mixed with something else in your closet!

  1. Any plans for y’all to do a hairstyle video for those of us with long hair?

  2. My darling girl is getting better at mixing and matching – I get stuck in a rut too often! Right now I’ve got about 5 things that fit, so my rut is excusable I guess! I need to try to accessorize! I figure that with my weight loss it’s high time I figure out my style and re-build my wardrobe slowly with clothes I really like and feel good in.

  3. I love Faith’s second outfit with the Anthro top and pop of red color!

This is a great series because it is helping me to look at things in a new way, like accessories for example. We tend to mix it up too, to buy things that go with multiple things…..

    Fun posts!

    1. Could you give a little explanation for the waistband….is it just a cut off t-shirt or is there sewing involved? My daughter’s build makes it quite a challenge to find shirts long enough and this looked like such a great fix for the problem. Thank you!

  4. I love this series! With the t-shirt waistbands, do they have elastic at the unseen top part? I would like to see a close-up of the whole thing to see how they made it.

  5. Love Faith’s outfits!
I have a little different personality than you and your girls- I look for my favorite combination and wear it pretty much only that way, although I do occasionally mix and match, but then only to create a new favorite combination. That probably sounds boring to you, but for me it helps keep my life calmer. And it’s probably a bit of perfectionist in me, looking for the “one best way”, to quote Mr. Gilbreth. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who randomly quotes early 20th century kind of books 🙂 ).
And while I wear plenty of skirts and tops, I absolutely love wearing dresses. Actually, they can sometimes be versatile too. I have a creamy lace dress that I dress up/down and with different color accessories depending on the season, temperature and occasion.
Thanks for continuing this modesty series – I’m really enjoying it!

  6. I love the waist band – My daughter who is 8 is very tall and long wasted what a great idea!!!
