Embracing Modesty, No 16

We are bouncing back to Mom this week.  I often get asked about my clothing by strangers.  People will stop ma and ask anything from am I Amish (that one always cracks me up) to where do I buy my skirts.

Embracing modesty: being comfortable via The Pennington Point

Even though I do try to look fixed up (that’s just me….I’ve always been that way) I still want to be comfortable.  In fact, comfort is about #2 on my list of priorities.  I have too much going on to go around feeling smushed and pushed.

This first look is from a day when I was running errands then going out to dinner with my girlfriends.  My friend and I go out about once a week, so it’s very casual.  I love these flowy knit skirts for comfort and femininity.

Here’s a breakdown of where I got these pieces: skirt-Lane Bryant, tshirt-Cato, Blazer-Target (I added the buttons myself), shoes-Birkenstock, scarf-it was a gift from a friend, but cute scarves are easy to find.

When I wear so much black I feel all gangsta.

This little number was something I found on clearance at Macy’s.  The top was a dress that had a weird length.  It was too short to wear as a winter dress (plus the length didn’t flatter me at all!) and too long to be a shirt.  So I shortened it.  And I used the part I cut off to make the sleeves a little longer.  It’s not that the sleeves were too short, but my lunch lady arm flaps are something I’m uncomfortable showing, so I like a longer sleeve.

Shirt/dress-Macy’s, skirt-Cato, vest-Cato, shoes-Birkenstocks. And I want to say here that I love a pretty shoe.  But my feet have issues.  Bummer.

Oh, and while we’re here, let me also add that I am all about a fun purse.  I would have a closet full of pretty purses if I could and have a deep appreciation for a gorgeous bag.  This is one of my favorite crazy purses.  I’m not joking.  I LOVE this purse!

This last picture is just a day in town with the kids.  Again…it’s all knit and really comfy.  And this shows another favorite purse.

Skirt-Macy’s, tshirt-Cato, vest-Avenue, jacket-Macy’s, shoes-Clark’s (I’m going to show you these shoes next week…they ROCK!)

And the awesome necklace was made for me by my daughter Faith.  Some of the beads are even wrapped in burlap….that girls knows what I love!

embracing modesty

It’s really easy to be comfortable and modest.  And for this plus-sized gal, it helps to know what shapes I look good in.  I can tweak and adjust as necessary to draw the eye away from the puffy parts of my body.

  1. What’s funny is you refer to yourself as a plus-sized gal, and whenever I see pictures of you, I don’t think of you that way at all! You do such a great job of finding and making gorgeous outfits that flatter your body and still look modest! Someday if you’re ever out in Santa Clarita, CA, we have GOT to go thrifting and crafting together!

    1. Hi Becky! I am definitely plus-sized. I do try to make the best of it though. What else can ya do? 🙂 And yes….if I am ever out that way I’d love for you to show me the best places to thrift! Lisa~

  2. So you are Amish all these years and I missed getting to ride in a buggy? 😉 You are beautiful inside and out! I’m just glad you wear clothes or we might have issues. Lol!

    1. Lana, I’ve got an old horse you could ride, but that’s about as close as you’ll get to a horse and buggy with me. 🙂 And thanks for being glad I wear clothes. I’m sure there are many people that are grateful for that. LOL! Lisa~

  3. I am plus size too and I love the outfits you put together. They give me inspiration for my own wardrobe. Some things I would have never thought of! Thanks so much.

    1. Vickie, it’s not easy for us bigger girls to find things that flatter us! Have fun finding new ways to wear what you have. Lisa~

  4. You look really fantastic in the blue and brown outfit! The others are nice too, but the blue/brown combo is sparkling! (I can’t quite DO the fuzzy purse thing, myself, but I always appreciate finding someone else who likes something funky and odd!) And last but not least, THANK YOU for being a fellow Birkenstock wearer. I happen to think they look great with skirts and really, my German feet don’t fit in anything else for long. 🙂 You are a great inspiration.

    1. Gina, I think what sets the blue and brown apart is the crocheted vest. It adds a little flair. 🙂 And it’s nice to have fellow Birkenstock wearers out there. There are a few more attractive options. Lisa~

  5. I didn’t even know what a maxi skirt was till this year! Thank you fb & bloggers like Lisa & websites like Very Jane. I’ve got my eye put for a good deal on a maxi skirt:) Lisa, you look lovely as usual:)

    1. Candace, I knew what a maxi skirt was in the 4th grade. LOL! But then that was the 70’s and they were all the rage back then. You should be able to find a good deal on one this time of year. They’re everywhere. Let us know! Lisa~

    1. Thanks Deanna! I have always been a fix-myself-up kind of girl, so I’ve had plenty of practice. I appreciate your compliment for sure….sometimes I wonder if I’m in crazyland. LOL! Love you, Lisa~

  6. I was in Cato a couple weeks ago and was sooo excited to see all the cute skirts they have in for summer! I wasn’t there to shop for myself so I didn’t buy any (self-control, I do have some!) but when I have some cash to spend on myself I know where I’m heading! My fav or the group is the alterations you did to the dress! Brilliant! I had to do a double take on the sleeve to see where you added on, you’re good!

    1. Kerri, I know! They do have some cute and affordable skirts in there. Good job on the self control. I’m glad you liked the dress I altered. To make add-ons look good you just have to pay close attention to how it’s made and try to duplicate that as best you can. On this one the pattern helped. Even up close you can’t really tell I added anything.

Let us know if you find a good skirt at Cato. They don’t have the same things in every store. Lisa~
