LET.IT.GO and a Giveaway

by Lisa on December 11, 2012

It may come as no surprise to you that I can be….well….a little teensy bit controlling.

It can be good, like when I’m getting ready for a party, “Hey let’s put the little sandwiches right there so everyone can reach them…and place the napkin fold to the outside so they are easier for our guests to pick up.” {How thoughtful}

It can also be really annoying, like when we are getting ready for a party, “Hey let’s put the little sandwiches right there so everyone can reach them…and place the napkin fold to the outside so they are easier for our guests to pick up.” {Freak!}

When I was given Karen Ehman’s new book to read, “LET.IT.GO” about letting go of control I thought it might be a good way for me to see myself a little better and maybe learn something.

Let It Go

I snuggled down in my recliner and started to read.  It was easy at first….funny, friendly, it was like Karen and I were becoming fast friends.

Then I got to a list of questions.  It was a little checklist to see just how controlling I am.  OUCH!  I scored higher than I thought I would.  Maybe I’m more than a teeny bit controlling.

I’d read at night, then the next day I would pay attention to ways I was controlling my family.  Then I’d go back to the book at night and more light would shine through Karen’s words into my heart and I’d see myself a little deeper.  But the writing is so kind and understanding that all the while I was being convicted I felt like I had a caring friend sitting by my side.

I’m telling you, I can already feel the Lord using the book to change me, and after that first little test result from chapter one it is clear that I need to do some changing.

One night when I was about halfway through the book when James and I went out to dinner.  I decided before we left that I was not going to try to control anything for the whole evening.  None of that, “Honey, you’re driving too fast,” or, “Remember if you eat that you will feel bad later.”  (OK, I already told you I have a problem so no need to comment on how I control my husband) ((uh oh…..now I’m controlling you.  This has to stop.))

There was a noticeable difference in the evening.  James was laughing more.  I was more relaxed (although right at first I was a little twitchy).  I realized how often I was resisting the urge to control and it wasn’t long before I started to feel sorry for James.  Living with me may not be as dreamy as I had previously believed.

I can’t say enough good about this “LET.IT.GO”.  Even if you’re not as messed up as I am you will learn things about yourself from reading it and draw closer to the Lord.  You can order it here.

And here’s something fun…..I get to give two of you a copy!

GIVEAWAY: It’s simple.  Just leave me a comment.  You can tell me anything you want.  I refuse to control what you say.  I’m reformed.

The giveaway starts now (December 11) and ends at midnight on Thursday, December 13.

The links go through my Amazon affiliate shop and I will receive a small amount if you buy through that.

Allow me to introduce myself: my husband calls me “Cecil B. DeMille” when we are trying to get our Christmas card photos done! I’m a freak about it, I admit it. I think this book would be great for me in so many ways–perfect start for the new year!

Hello Cecil….nice to meet you. Maybe by next year’s Christmas pictures he will need a new nickname for you. :) Lisa~

I’m a little bit afraid of this book…well at least that checklist anyway! I’m a teacher…of kindergarten. All day long I fight to control 26 five-year olds (as you can imagine I’m exhausted at the end of the day). Do you think this would carry over into the classroom?!?!

Lisa December 12, 2012 at 3:40 pm

Stacie, if you can manage 25 five-year-olds then you can manage this little old book. LOL! I am amazed! Lisa~

My daughter reminded me the other day when she was addressing a card and I corrected her on where to put the receiver’s name . She replied, “Can I never do anything right?” That hurt, but it was true. I know I am too controlling. Thanks for the intro to this book, and thanks for the chance at the giveaway.

I recently did a personality assessment and found I was predominately prone to “perfectionism”, which wasn’t surprising to me at all.

I suppose this would be a helpful read — whether I win it or buy it for myself.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I’m still in college, Lisa, but even at my age, I’m starting to realize how I can be kind of a control freak. I’m a bit of a perfectionist actually — and I’ve realized that my perfectionist tendencies are actually a very sneaky form of staying in control haha. I will definitely look into reading this book :) -Anna
