A Forest or a Mantle…Who Can Tell?

Happiness is a family fun mantle for Christmas.

Before I show you anything I want to say that my mantle is the hardest thing to photograph in.the.world….except for crying babies and the bulls of Pamplona.  Even those probably have better lighting than my dining room mantle.  I’m open to suggestions.  I’ve tried everything I know.  Which isn’t much.

So back to the important stuff….instead of the typical adorable, fancy mantle I usually do I decided on something different this year.  I wanted a whole forest of trees and to get all of the kids in on the action.  We spent an afternoon making trees with whatever I had on hand and ideas we got from either Pinterest or our crazy brains.

Here you go…..our forest style Christmas mantle.

Isn’t it sweet?

We made so many trees that I’m going to present them a little at a time all week.  If I tried to do it here this post would be as long as “War and Peace” and just as exhausting.  We’ll spread it out…..give you a break.

In addition to the trees, I made a loooong strip of 3″ wide burlap and wrapped it around the base of everything.  Then I made some 5″ x 12″ strips with the words “peace,” “joy” and “praise.  I wired those to the store bought trees we had from last year.  The burlap pulls everything together.

There were so many trees that they were almost falling off the mantle.  So we moved about half of them to the shelves across the room.  The shelves are not quite ready for their close up, but you’ll see them in the home tour next week.

Today’s contributions to our Christmas forest are from Levi (5) and Noah (13).

We gave Levi a piece of paper and some crayons and told him to make a tree.  This is what he made.

Patience cut it out and added the stand.  So cute.  So Levi.

Noah did what Noah does best.  He made a couple of trees with Legos.

We couldn’t have a family forest without Lego trees.  It wouldn’t be right.

I can hardly wait to show you the rest.  The best part is we did it together as a family.

If you’re following me on Instagram you’ll see behind the scenes pictures.

I am loving using small trees around the house – they look great and woodsy and wintery. Perfect for this time of year!

  5. It is adorable and you are so right that the burlap pulls everything together. I have thought to do this before, but never got around to it so I’m glad to see such a good example of a crazy forest of trees on a mantel.

  6. Lovely mantel. I love all the trees and the natural simplicity of it all. My fave has to be those stockings. So many all across the mantel. Love that! Did you make them?
