31 Everyday Ways to Connect with Your Child, Day 10: Playing Games

There’s nothing like sitting down together to play a game to connect with someone.  While playing a game we learn, we compete, we cheer on victories and sympathize with losses.

Even if you can’t do it every, single day.  At least once a week just stop what you’re doing and sit down to a board game or a quick round of Go Fish.  This is a great time to pay attention to struggles your child is having.  Maybe they are too competitive or mean, maybe they won’t try very hard at things….if you’re sitting and paying attention you will detect these issues and can help them work on them.

There are so many sweet moments of opportunity to connect when you’re playing a game.  Reading the cards, sharing strategy, counting the moves, being in the moment.  Look your child in the eye and tell him how smart that last move was.

Here are a few of our family’s favorite games:  Apples to Apples, Wits & Wagers and Qrazy Quandries.

If you’ve never heard of Qrazy Quandries then you’re going to be excited that my friend Sarah from Simply Fun will be giving away 2 of them at our 31 Ways webinar on November 5th!  You have 5 ways to enter.

For the first entry, just copy and paste the url into your browser and put your email address in to get a reminder.  That’s all you have to do!

  1. Favorite games?? We love card games – easy to travel with – some of our favorites are UNO, 7-8-9 (math involved in this one – I always kick butt), In a Pickle, Circles, Phase 10 Dice, there are several others but I don’t remember, must be that age thing again. LOL

  2. I like to play lots of games, but I think Blokus fits us well, because it can be played by such a wide range of ages. Probably nertz is my favorite game, though.

  3. We enjoy all types of board games here. We do play alot of Mexican Train Dominoes (great game for all ages to play together). A big favorite with the kids is Apples to Apples. I’m enjoying the SimplyFun website – perfect timing, with Christmas coming up.

  4. My favorite game is Settlers of Catan. I love playing that with my siblings and can’t wait until my son is old enough to play. A close second is Ticket to Ride.

  5. Interesting how you point out the behaviors noticed during game time. I’ve never thought about that but it is so true. My daughter is a game lover. She LOVES to play games. The ones we like are Guess Who, Go Fish and Uno. And she loves Princessopoly (she’s a princess herself). So any time she can get a game in she will take it.
