31 Everday Ways to Connect with Your Child, Day 14: Learning Together

Even though most of the ideas in this series will work for all children, sometimes a child is particularly difficult to connect with.  Some are shy, introverted, quiet or they’ve been hurt and they are guarded.  Today’s tip will work beautifully with that kid.

It’s about LEARNING.

If you have a child that doesn’t like to share their thoughts or talk a lot, then instead of connecting through an output of information, let’s connect with an input of information.

Find something he is interested in and make it a plan to learn more about it together.  It can be general, like learning about the Civil War or more specific like how to build a rocket.  It doesn’t really matter.  You just need to do it with him.

Start with an idea.  Then go to him and say, “Hey, I know you really like horses and so do I.  I thought we could learn more about them together.”  Then make some plans.  Get books, draw pictures, make a weekly goal and have it all end in a trip to a local stable to meet some horses and horse owners.

This will not only show your child that you are interested in what he is interested in, but it will give you things to talk about.  You’ll have something you’re working on together.

What do you think your child would like to learn about with you?

  1. My son is the shyer out of my two. I took both of them to an art class in our area. They each went in their own class according to age. My son was very quiet. There was an assistant that sat with him during the sidewalk chalk time and drew with him and started talking superhero talk. My son left with smiles beaming! That guy that sat with him and got in on his interest made such a difference in my son’s impression of that whole experience.
