Anatomy of a Schoolroom

Yesterday morning some newspaper guys came to my house to take some pictures for our local paper.  They are doing an article on homeschooling and wanted to see the master in action.  But she wasn’t available so they called me.  (badum-bum)

I asked the photographer to send me one of the pictures.  He had a fisheye lens that got the whole room.  Cool!  So I’m showing you the picture not because it is interesting about homeschooling, but because it’s the first time I’ve been able to show you my entire school room/dining room.

The distortion makes the room look much smaller than it is, but showing you the whole thing makes me happy.  It’s like you’re visiting me and putting up with one of my annoying house tours.  Like when people make you watch their vacation slide shows and you have to keep yourself from running out screaming.  But since we’re not actually in the same room together you can scream all you want.

The white table we call “The School Table” and we sit there in the mornings just like in the picture and do school  The white board behind me is usually filled with math problems, definitions, Bible verses and Levi drawings.  The shelf below that we call “The School Shelf.” (obviously we like to get creative with the names of our furniture)  That’s where I keep the school books we are using, art supplies, etc.

That doorway in the upper left goes down the hall.  You can see the door to the “Girl’s Bathroom” barely open around the corner.

Continuing down the wall there are two curtained openings flanking a cabinet.  Both of those openings lead into the kitchen and the cabinet holds all of our games and a small TV (it only plays DVDs, no reception).

The “Black Table” is on the other side of the room.  That’s where we eat all of our meals.  The looooong counter behind it serves as a school desk and a buffet when we have guests over.  I built it 2 summers ago at the same time as I built the floating shelves above it.  They are kind of empty right now because we are making the switch to our summer decor.

On the wall to the right that you can’t see there is the fireplace and 2 doorways going into the living room.  I think I have an old picture somewhere…..

All in all this room has SIX doorways.  It’s a hub of activity…like Grand Central Station.  But with burlap.  And more people.

There you go….not such a long tour that you are hoarse from screaming, long enough for you to wish you were somewhere else.

Just right.

  1. Wow…how do you get all those kids to sit at the table. Mine are all over the house. Of course, only two of them are actually doing formal school…the others are just making it hard for the rest of us to get anything done;) I am kind of jealous of people with a schoolroom…but I’ll try not to let that get in the way of our friendship. Seriously, love the room – look so organized!!

  2. Nice. 8~)
Thanks for the “tour”…it was very enjoyable.
Let us know when the article will be in the newspaper….so we can read it. 8~)
    Take care,
    Nancy

  3. Love to see your schoolroom! Mine has moved throughout my house. Started in my kitchen, then upstairs to bonus room, down to dining room, out to den, back to kitchen and now is going back upstairs to bonus room. LOL

So thrilled to hear about the newspaper article!! I am sure you did homeschoolers proud!

  4. I like it better in the fish eye – and I’ve actually been there. I suppose it’s just the different perspective. :0)

  5. Love it……..looks great, I just renovated my desk/school area, but I have a dedicated room now after 13 years…….We have individual desks…………my desk is my sanity, I do school, bills, blog, facebook, pintrest, church stuff, ministry stuff……….I miss my desk when I go away! But your room is a decorating wonder, mine, well mine looks like a school room! But I do have a book fetish……..they cover nearly EVERY wall and I have a dedicated library now, thank you Jesus thank you Jesus!! Lovely post from your Aussie friend Cathy

  6. I love it! When we were house hunting I wanted a dining room in our home to turn it into a school room, but it was not to be, so we have school in the kitchen and just clean off the table for every snack and meal. I’d say the table gets sprayed and wiped about 4 times a day! I desperately want to paint our table black because it is honey oak (yuck) and really worn, but my hubby loves wood and is worried that I’ll have to repaint too often since I wipe it down so frequently. How does a painted table hold up at your house?
