This Diet Brings Out the Worst in Me

The kids all have the sniffles this morning and feel kind of blah.  There are boxes of tissue lying about and people asking to watch movies at 9:00 in the morning.  I don’t think this is what they had in mind when they declared it Martin Luther King Jr day.  Who are “they” are anyway…..the deciders of government holidays?

The weather here has been overcast and cool for the past few days.  My mood has been pretty much the same….cool and maybe, (don’t tell James I said this) a little bit fussy.  I think it’s my diet.  It was a rough weekend for the diet monster.

It started on Friday.  For some reason I started suddenly craving normal food.  By normal I mean fried and full of carbs of course.  James and I have a date every Friday night so we decided to get seafood.  I went off the wagon and ate too much.  I thought that would satisfy the cravings, but it didn’t.  I felt like climbing the walls all weekend.  I can honestly tell you that I didn’t cheat or eat anything I shouldn’t have….but man-oh-man it was hard. One night I dreamed of cotton candy…..lots and lots of cotton candy.

Plus I’m up half a pound this morning which means that even though I toughed it out and resisted the evil urges, I didn’t lose weight.  Nice.

There were good things about the weekend.  The girls and I got a bunch of new products made for Shop 24 and I can’t wait to debut them later in the week.  It was nice to use a little of my energy on creativity and get my mind off of potato chips and chocolate ice cream.

On Saturday morning James brought me a package and in the process of opening it for me he got a paper cut.  He tends to ever-so-slightly exaggerate his ailments so when a teeny bit of red showed on his paper cut he started saying, “I’m bleeding!  Look at this…..BLOOD!”  Poor guy.  He rushed off to the kitchen to wash it while I limped along behind making fun of him.  Within minutes most of the kids were in the kitchen with us and participating in the commotion.  Good times.  Family togetherness.

Later that afternoon I was painting some Valentine’s Day products with red paint and got it all over the ends of my fingers.  It looked so much like blood that I decided to show James so I went out to his office.  I leaned in and showed him my hands, “See, this is what bleeding looks like.”  He jumped up in concern and of course, he thought it was real blood and that I was really hurt.  I was laughing so hard that it took him a minute to figure out what had happened.  He vowed to never trust me again and if I get hurt for real then don’t come crying to him.  Blah, blah, blah.  He loves me too much to ignore me if I really hurt myself….I think.

Today we’re back to reality.  Sick kids, gray days and me wishing for a couple of Snicker bars.

But I won’t do it.  I’ll just complain about it for a while then entertain myself by finding more ways to tease James.

Have a great week!

  1. Here I’ll think about those bad foods for you so you don’t have to, okay? I say this as I sit here with a glass of PLAIN water next to me…. yes it is my arch nemesis! I am perpetually dehydrated but I loathe drinking water in the winter for a number of reasons…. a.) it makes me have to go potty ALL the time b.) there is no taste 3.) we go through TP too quickly 4.) its doesn’t make my nose all tickly and tingly and e.) it not hot outside. So I’ll sip my PLAIN water and think about bad foods… sound like a good idea??? 🙂

Keep up the good work, it will pay off in the end. O I can hardly wait to see what you and the girls have been up to! Have a wonderful day!!

  2. Oh, I started the diet thing today…. can you tell by my typing that I’m shaking. I actually am 🙁 And by tomorrow, the kids will be plying me with chocolate cos I’ll be a danger to them and to me.

And I *love* the laughs that family times give. I often look back at a day and smile to myself remembering the silly laughs we had that day…. Happy Days 🙂

  3. Just a little side note on paper cuts. If you rinse them out immediately with peroxide, it will remove the paper fibers which are what make a paper cut hurt/itch/bother you so much more than a normal cut. 🙂

  4. I feel your pain! We are really starting our diet now. I’m kind of crabby tonight. I know that it will get better, but right now, everything is getting on my nerves. Also, I’ve found that cheating a lot doesn’t make the cravings go away. It just makes them stronger. To keep the cravings at bay I just try to fill up on the things I can eat. It does help somewhat.

  5. coming out of hibernation to see what you are up to 🙂

do you have a juicer? that really is the best way to diet. you don’t have to limit yourself. well i suppose if you tried to juice 12 times a day you’d be in trouble.

or if you just wanted to curb your cravings by juicing snacks. lemon, apple, ginger is the best!

    miss you.

  6. I had a bad weekend with eating. Mark was out of town, Abbie had a friend over and there was a bunch of snack food in the house. But I read this just this morning and even though it is one of those silly clique sayings it is true, “You don’t drown because you fell in, you drown because you stopped swimming.” There is grace in every aspect of our lives because of Jesus, and we just have to move forward. Of course, we can only do that by asking Jesus to actually put one foot in front of the other for us sometimes. But we are new creatures! Every day is new and fresh and clean for us. Because of Jesus!

  7. Lisa,

You may have already read this book, but just in case you haven’t, I am finding “Made to Crave”, by Lysa Terkeurst to be a good help in my battle with weight loss. It’s helping me to change my outlook on my eating habits and to focux my cravings where they should be going. Not sure if you can find it in the library, but you can find it for a good price on half.com. Hope this is helpful to you!

  8. That was me today. It seemed like no matter what I did I was hungry. I managed to eat mostly healthy stuff, but it wasn’t fun managing it. Tomorrow will be better! Hope you’re having a great week! and be careful with those fingers 😉
