Week 2: Deco Art

It’s week 2 of the One Month to Win It competition.  It’s so much fun to see what all of the contestants made.  Go over and VOTE….you’ll be inspired.

This week’s theme is Deco Art.  The great folks at Deco Art sent me some of their delicious Designer Series All-Purpose Home Decor Acrylics.  I had never used it before and I was impressed with how well it covered.

I painted this lamp with a single coat and hardly used any of the paint.  It went on very smoothly and the lamp doesn’t look like it has been painted.

I found the lamp in my storage building.  I wanted something I could put on top of my little painted bird table.  I think I got it at IKEA 100 years ago.

First we painted the post black…easy breezy.  Then I decided to recover the shade.  I rolled the shade on newspaper and made a pattern.

I wanted to use leftover bits of burlap to cover the shade, but I didn’t want it to look like one curved piece, so I folded the pattern into four and cut it apart.

I cut out 4 pieces of burlap (but you could easily use any fabric for this project), making sure the grain was running straight up and down. I cut it a little bigger all the way around for the sewing and the gluing.

Then sewed the pieces together 2 x 2, like Noah and the animals.

Next I sewed those 2 pieces together and hemmed it all around the bottom.  It gets a little lumpy, but a good ironing gets the lumps out.  The cover easily fit around the original shade with a little hot glue, then I glued a trim on the edges to cover my messy places.  Trim fixes everything.

I decided to add a black stripe to the shade, so I taped off the burlap and used the same acrylic to paint the stripes right on.

I didn’t measure or anything…just eyeballed it.  When it was finished I did a little touch up to the paint with a sponge brush and it was done.

It looks cute on my bird table.

Just a simple little project that fit my budget (free) and it took about an hour.

Of course I am thinking about putting the lamp somewhere else, because I can never leave well enough alone.  I need a lamp in the guest house too.  And the kitchen…I love a lamp in the kitchen.  It’s so charming and unexpected.

I hope you’ll head over and VOTE for your favorite Deco Art project this week.
