We May Be a Little too Competitive

It was non-stop here this weekend.

On Friday I got to see my sister’s new baby, Ellie, and man-oh-man is she cute!  I decided not to sneak her out.  My sister seemed kind of attached to her, so I left her there.

My sister had Ellie the same day as another friend, Charity had her baby.  Congratulations Charity on your new baby boy.  If he and Ellie end up getting married I want credit for the set-up.  I will expect to give the toast at the rehearsal dinner where I can tell all about when they were in diapers and how I linked them up by “Liking” both of their little squishy newborn pictures on Facebook.

Saturday morning during our usual family breakfast and worship time, someone mentioned holding their arms straight up in the air and it quickly it became a competition.  With the whole family.  Who could hold their arms up the longest? (Of course I didn’t compete, I had to be the photographer.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it)

Even Elijah and Levi did it for a while.

I could try to convince you we were praising the Lord and everyone just couldn’t stop worshiping, but then this next picture wouldn’t make sense.

We were trying to make it harder by holding oranges.  Something needed to get these people to stop.  It went on and on…..

Eventually it came down to 5 people: Jacob, Noah, Hope, Patience and Faith.  (James lasted 45 minutes then had to get back to real life)

I told them that whoever won could choose something special to have for dessert on Sunday night.  Those of us that weren’t in the competition slowly drifted away.  Hope and Patience dropped out around an hour and a half, Noah couldn’t take it anymore at an hour and 45 minutes.  After TWO HOURS only Jacob and Faith were left and I made them stop.  I knew at that point they weren’t going to give up and we had work to do.  So I called it a tie, they agreed upon cheesecake as their prize and let their arms fall.

I never said were were normal.

The rest of the day was occupied with filling shop orders, cleaning house and by 4:30 I was out the door and headed for the big city with 6 of my girlfriends for a night on the town.  Ladies’ night out is just what I needed after a long day of arm competitions and monogramming….oh and did I mention cleaning up after more sick kids?

Yep, we are still sick.  The fun never ends around here.

The weekend came to a close with our favorite Sunday ritual….watching “The Amazing Race.”  James and I settled into our recliners and watched the race while pretending to be in it.  Pretending to race is much easier than actually holding our arms up in the air for 2 hours.  There’s an older couple running this season and tonight they said they were doing well in the race because they don’t argue or blame each other.  I looked across to the next recliner and said to James, “See?  That’s a lesson for us.  If you would stop blaming me and if you would stop arguing with me we would be able to accomplish great things.”  Whew!  Now that James is going to stop doing those things our lives will be so much better.

Have a great week!

  1. Jacob is so serious in those first few photos – you can tell he’s ‘in it to win it!’ 🙂

What a hilarious start to the day! I am not competitive enough – I would get bored and go off to do other things too!

Sorry you still have sickness going on…

  2. Hilarious Lisa! I love love love that your family has fun together like that. You could start a new Thanksgiving tradition. It would keep everyone quiet and occupied for awhile.

Oh, I am so jealous you got to hold a newborn baby. I think that is one of the best feelings in the world.

  3. Just to be helpful, in case they run out of competitions… We’ve heard that you can’t fold a piece of paper more than eleven times. (Tip: My family tried it with toilet paper.) You’re welcome. 🙂
I love your breakfast table. It makes me smile!

  4. Ellie is beautiful…if she and Vance get married, I will totally give you the credit. And you can give the toast (even though you will probably be toasting with iced tea). Just wondering if your Bible lesson was on Aaron and Moses – holding up his arms so that Israel would win the battle. Or was it just a random competition? You could totally turn it into a Bible lesson…..
