Losing My Voice and Other Old Lady Maladies

Why is there always something wrong with me?  If it’s not my knee it’s my shoulder.  If it’s not my hip it’s my neck.  I can see that I won’t be aging well.

Today I have almost no voice.  I am still hoarse from singing all day on Sunday.  Between Jacob and I rehearsing for hours then the extreme high notes in a few of the songs, this old voice box has called it quits.  I probably should have been exercising my voice and doing lots of professional warm-ups with hot water and honey.  But instead I drank a Diet Dr Pepper and didn’t eat dinner.  I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

My beautiful friend Heather sent me a video of Jacob and I singing.  If you’re in a hurry I won’t blame you if you skip the video and just scan down to the end of the post.

My three conclusions:

1) I have decided that from now on I will only wear black and require everyone around me to wear black at all times.  I look so much skinnier that way.

2) I hold my head weird when I sing.  I may also do it when I’m talking, but I wont be videoing myself to find out.  It’s one of those things that I’d just rather not know.

3) My daughter Faith is cute when she sings (thankfully she didn’t inherit my weird head thing).  I never get to see her because she sits on the other side of the choir from me.  That’s her just behind Jacob’s head to the left.

4) That’s my friend Sara behind me to the right  She and I will be making a pact to wear black from now on.  I’ll stand behind her when she wants to look skinny and she’ll do the same for me.  She’s that kind of friend.

Hopefully I will have my voice back soon and life will be normal.  Except now my left elbow hurts.

Seriously, what is happening?!  If you are older than me please don’t tell me that it just gets worse.  I don’t want to know about my weird head thing and I don’t want to know that this is how I will feel for the rest of my life.  This is one of those times when it is OK to lie, like when I ask James if I look fat or if you forget someone’s name.

  1. Beautiful singing!! You know, having the coming look down on your makes you looks skinnier – I mean “you” actually as “me”! I always tilt my chin down when I get a picture – it feels weird but makes my face look thinner! When you take a picture going upwards towards your face it has the opposite effect! You look great and your son sings so well, too! Momma must’ve been so proud!!

  2. Lisa,
I enjoyed listening to you & Jacob sing as much this time, as on Sun. night, maybe even a little more, because I got to see y’all close up. I didn’t see you do anything with your head that looked funny to me, y’all just sounded good. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  3. Skip? Yeah, my laptop’s gotta skip in it, all right! When the video gets to the end, it keeps “skipping” back to the beginning again!

*tears* I’ve bee so emotional lately and this lovely presentation sent me over the edge… .

Lisa, I LOVE HOW YOU WORSHIP WHEN YOU SING!

Lisa, I LOVE HOW YOU SMILE WHEN YOU SING!

Lisa and Jacob, I LOVED THE DUET!

And Jacob, you sing with anointing like Mom does. Proud of you, kid. (Sorry to call you “kid.” I’m one of those, ahem, OLDER ladies, too.)

Finally, remember that the knee bone’s connected to the shoulder bone, and the hip bone’s connected to the neck bone. It gets a whole lot better, Lisa, because at 50, the elbow becomes connected to the, oh, never mind! You told us not to do that to you!

  4. Wow Lisa! You and your son both have such beautiful voices! Just great! I love his low, low singing! (and I love black too) I also think I’m older than you are and I just got over almost 2 weeks of a pulled out back! I’m not going down without a fight! I’m going to be out walking EVERY night now!

  5. Becky Smith, you are a singer/songwriter and I know you can do great things. You’re not fooling me!

You all crack me up. I love the stories you tell and the comments you leave for me and each other. What a rowdy bunch. When we meet in Heaven it’s gonna be amazing! Lisa~

  6. Woohoo!!! Girl, you hit those high notes! No wonder you don’t have any voice. Which, if it happened to me by the way, my children would be thrilled, to say the least.

What a pleasure it is to hear you singing with your son. This is what happens when families worship together… Such a gift.

Thought you looked wonderful too. You pulled the outfit off like a charm, no worries there. Forget the little skinny woman and her back door compliment at the fitting room. It’s too bad she’s not fun to snuggle against. (I’m only assuming here. ahem.)

  7. WOW!!! You both sing so beautifully!! (is that the right word for a young man singing??). And the emotion and utter worship in your heart as you sing is just so evident! I mean, it just blazes out through the screen. So contagious!

Thank you so much for posting the video. Love it!!

  8. just beautiful. it gave me chills 🙂 is that a brooklyn tab number?

and i’m totally going with the wearing black and requiring others to do the same. i figure i have enough kids and they are always on me like glue…it should work!

now go rest and stop talking!

  9. Beautiful song, beautiful family. You and your son look like siblings (that’s a compliment). Please consider writing more posts about your parenting journey.

  10. I’ve totally got your back on the black thing.

And if you were wondering why I was smiling so big while you sang it was because it was so beautiful (and I was envisioning you with “praise and worship heartburn” a la Tim Hawkins.)

  11. Arrrhhhh!!! satellite speed is being super slow and I can only watch this in stages, but I am coming back to watch this again properly- it looks fantastic, well done, hope your voice is better soon!

  12. I have tears in my eyes…love how you look up towards God, hands raised in praise, and beautiful music unto God….God said for us to make a joyful noise and you both did. I challenge anyone to watch and not be touched….I’m gonna go watch again and see if I can watch clearly….but I bet God will cloud my eyes again, so we only see Him thru your beautiful song! <3

  13. Your family is so wonderful. I so enjoy reading about each and every one of you 🙂

Your friend in the Big City, well more on the outskirts … but you know what I mean 🙂
