A Family Fourth

It was a great holiday here.  I never made the apple pie though.  The oven heats up this old farmhouse so much that we try not to use it in the summer.  The oven, not the house.

I got a watermelon instead, which turned out to be rotten when I cut into it, so we continued to lower our expectations and ended up with fruit salad.

Despite a few hiccups, the dinner was great.

I made Martha’s pretzel dogs and everyone loved them.  Thanks Martha!

The cheap carbonated lemonade from Walmart was kind of disgusting, but the kids liked it.  Ya gotta love that about kids….so easy to please.

We swam in the pool all morning and played games in the evening after dinner.  Just good old quiet family time.

Everyone dressed in red, white and blue.  We do corny things like that.  We get all dressed up and use the pretty dishes when no one is coming over.  It is our way.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

  1. Leaving the mall parking lot now. We baked the Fag Cake. Got subs from Jersey Mike’s. Ate in motorhome. Played Apples to Apples. All ten of us. The fireworks were nice!

    Happy Fourth!

  2. Thank you so much for posting the recipe for the pretzel dogs. We had a great time working together to make them. Ours were not as photo worthy as yours but they were really really good. We had extra dough and the kids had a great time making strange pretzel shapes. I hope it made a fourth to remember in our new house.

  3. I’m still snickering about Kelly’s typo… Before I read down to see she’d actually made an error I was trying to figure out the recipe.

The pretzel dogs look yummy – the lemonade I could have warned you about – don’t try the other flavors either…

It was a quiet day here – we did all our celebrating Saturday night and Sunday. Well… quiet except for the neighbors screaming bottle rocket show.

  4. looks like fun!
In Australia we call that drink lemon squash, our bottled lemonade is clear like sprite! Just in case you were interested!

  5. Love the look of the hot-dog-things… Love that you dressed in red, white and blue…. we did that for our 4th July and we’re in Scotland! And we flew your flag from our house. And we made flag pavlovas and flag cheesecakes, and ate and ate and ate.
Oh, and we had all the homeschoolers on the island with us to celebrate your day!

Hope you had a great one.

Oh, PS – you guys ought to change the tune of your Anthem…..WHO proposed this tune?! It was surely someone with an incredible range….the notes go from down in your boots up to the stars. I reckon you ought to have stuck with ours 😉

  6. Oh Kelley THANK YOU for making that clear. I was doing the same as Sara…trying to figure out what kind of cake that could be. LOL!

Rebecca, how fun that you made the same recipe. You’re so right…it will be a great memory. For us it wasn’t a thing we did together; I decided to make it a special meal that was a surprise for everyone else. I announced that dinner was ready and they all came in to see just what you saw in the picture. The dogs were so pretty that it made them feel like I had done something special just for them. Next time we’ll try it your way….everyone could make their own. I love that!

Deanne, I love hearing facts from across world. 🙂

Anne, I got such a giggle thinking of you doing it all up for the Fourth. Does everyone go with the flow or are there those who resist? And yes, our anthem is rough on the vocal chords…..imagine singing it as a second grader. Eek!

  7. We do fun things like that too!

Even though we were traveling home with a new pony yesterday, we dressed in red and blue etc… and someone asked me if we had been in the parade! hee hee

I like to use special things even though it is just for us- who better to use the special things on, than your family?

  8. OOOH!! I used to buy pretzel dogs in the vending machine when I worked as a technical writer…I loved those things!!

    Sounds like a delightful day!!

  9. Lisa, I love pretzel dogs though I have never tried to make them. Thanks for sharing the recipe. We had a quite 4th by just throwing some steaks on the grill and watching our neighborhoods fireworks.

  10. Hi Lisa, I noticed someone came from your blog to visit me and came over to check it out. 🙂 I guess the pretzel dogs were the culprits. Yours turned out great! I’m happy that you shared them and that they are well liked! Have a great evening!
