Texas Cold

Here in this part of Texas we get a little crazy when the temperature goes below freezing.  Schools cancel classes, stores close, we put an extra lamp in the chicken coop.  By lamp I mean a table lamp I bought at IKEA last year and was using in the guest house for our guests to read by.  Yes folks, that’s what the city people do when their animals get cold ‘cuz we don’t know nuthin’ ’bout farmin’.

Apparently James and Jacob think saving the chickens is more important than having a lovely, well lit home.  At least the chickens are staying warm in style.  And it’s OK with me because now I need a new lamp and I really want this one from Restoration Hardware.

I think buying me a $455 lamp is just the way to teach them to leave my accessories alone, don’t you?

At 5:30 this morning I turned on the news to see if the schools were closed.  I don’t know why this information is interesting to me.  I guess there’s something comforting in knowing that I won’t be the only mom in her pajamas at 10am.

The little boys have been fascinated all morning about our swimming pool being frozen over.  They’ve been watching the cat walk around on the ice and I can see their little minds turning.  “I wonder if I could walk across the pool.”  Sorry boys, you are not going to bundle up for a walking-on-ice-experiment.  Mommy doesn’t feel up to fishing you out of the frozen pool today.

Although I am still sick, I have graduated from the bed to my recliner.  The fever is gone, but the coughing, headache and dizziness continue.  I drift around the house every hour or so checking on the children and apologizing for being sick.  Only a mom feels convicted for resting when her body needs it.  Guilt, it’s a precious gift of womanhood passed from generation to generation.

This is supposed to be the last day of our freezing temperatures.  I’m glad.  Our family wasn’t cut out for this kind of lifestyle.  Of course, in July I will be complaining about the Texas heat.   The bottom line is I am only happy when the temperature is between 75-79°.

Thank goodness I have lamps to keep me warm.

  1. What a beautiful lamp!

We are battling the flu up here in Montana, and some cold weather too! I don’t mind it though because I’ve lived here my whole life. I hope you start feeling better real soon!!!!!

  2. It’s cold here in NC too!! No snow tho, just rain. I agree with the ideal temp! If I could move to a place that had those temps year round, I think I would be the happiest lady in all the land!! Of course, you and your brood are welcome as well! I’ll learn how to keep my house sparkly clean, and become a frugalista from you, and you can learn from me… ummmm… errr….. uhhhh… how to not feel so guilty for still being in your pajamas at 10AM?? LOL
The lamp is b-e-a-utiful! I totally think the chickens should pay you back for your kindness of the lamp with that one!! 😀

  3. Erica, thanks for the get well wishes. I’ll be fine. It’s never quick enough for me though. :::sigh:::

Jacque, you are hilarious! Yes, let’s find paradise and live there. No cold, not too hot, no guilt, no chicken lamps. Lisa~

  4. Hahahaha! We, too, are completely undone by this cold snap. Which is actually pretty funny. But the sun is out now, so we may survive. Hope ya’ll are well soon. We have the same mess going around here.

  5. I wondered if you got the cold weather too. Make that temperature 65- 75 and I’ll be comfortable.

  6. So I’m not the only one for feeling guilty when I’m sick? I battle a chronic illness and I am constantly apologizing to my family for not feeling well. Some days it is just hard to do much of anything and I ALWAYS feel guilty! My husband says, “Well, go ahead and feel guilty if that makes you feel better.” I guess the men don’t get the whole guilt thing. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard one apologize for being sick. I think we should follow their example.

As far as that slice of paradise, I live in that climate. The average year-round temperature is 64 degrees. The past 2 weeks have been in the upper 60s to upper 70s. I can’t say I feel guilty about that! 🙂

    Stay warm, feel better!

  7. I think I’ll miss the freezing temps just a teeny bit. Well, it doesn’t have to freeze, but I would like it to stay warm enough for s’mores… uh… I mean a *fire*, for a bit longer.

    Be better now.

  8. Poor American mom. 😉
    Get better NOW!!!

I saw that lamp on their site and fell in love with it, too. sigh.
Let’s split the cost, and you can have custody during Winter and Spring, and then you mail it to me for Summer and Autumn?
I may forget to mail it back, but you’ll forgive me.
Ha! I keep apologizing for my booboo wrist when I ask anyone else to hold/open/carry/wash/pick up something for me.
the guilt is inherited from Eve.
P.S. I just accidentally left a comment on Jame’s Blawg about taxes.
He might wonder what in the heck I am talking about.
    Wait.
    Everyone does that.
    Nevermind.

  9. Hi friend,
All my plants – well, RIP!
I hope you feel better soon! Enjoy the guilty pleasure of curling up and reading a book under warm covers!

    You are a blessing,
    lana

  10. i love weather between 45 and 85 degrees. but in SC, 85 can still mean humidity so i occasionally have to adjust it down to 80 degrees 🙂

It is so cold everywhere, make me want to move south, but I can’t get too much more south!
