Framing Spring

I spent today doing one of my favorite things.  No, not eating Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups until I made myself sick, although that is high on my list.  I worked on the living room.  I cleaned, I decorated, I re-hung pictures.  I even washed the couch cushions although that was no fun at all.  And by the way, the kids are no longer allowed to eat in the living room.

It was time to freshen up the frame over my green couch.  Last summer I had clocks in it.

In the fall I changed it to silhouettes, thanks to my friend Kellie.

And now I’ve changed it again for the spring.

We cut a piece of luann to fit the frame then covered it in batting and white burlap.  Then we used, you guessed it, my true love, the Cricut to cut out flowers.

I stapled the center of the flowers with my Fascinater, one of the holdovers from my old scrapbook days.   Patience helped me brown the edges with a stamp pad.

I stapled the flowers onto the board with a staple gun and then we curled up the edges a little.

It’s so calm and relaxing…like a spa retreat without the massage or the mud bath.

Two little butterflies drift by….ahhh…..

I am still not sure if I want to keep the burlap ribbon over the frame.  I like the way the color brings out the butterflies, but it’s a little too cutsie.  What do you think?

I still want to recover that green couch.  Someday, when our no-spending pledge is over I’m doin’ it!  But now that the cushions have been washed and ironed, it’s easier to wait.  I’d rather not go into how disgusting it was because that would distract from this relaxing flower-frame post.

The good news is that the frame project was completely free…yippee!  Tomorrow I’ll show you what I did with the pots my friend gave me for my birthday.  You will LOVE it.

  1. I’ve lain my finger over the burlap bow and decided it’s a keeper. Like you, my first thought was that it brings out the butterflies.

You need to be making a link every time you mention that Cricut love of yours. Then they’ll notice your little blog here and give you a Cricut to give away in a drawing or something and then I can win one for myself! (Only thinking of you here…)

    Love the spiffed up space!

  2. I love the bow, too! It IS cute – not overly cutesie. Perfect with the butterflies.
Also love the frame and the whole idea of changing it up seasonally. Almost makes me think of those boards that teachers have on the walls and change out….only this is WAY cooler! I love it! =-D

  3. Keep it! It really makes the focal point “pop” and I love the color. Guess I’ll have to get out my Big Shot and cut some flowers myself ….. hmmm, I wonder what that would look like over the mirror that never gets noticed at the entryway …..

  4. LOVE it and I too say the bow is a keeper!! I adore the butterflies and that you are changing it seasonally. I think so far I have liked the silouhettes best though, reminds of when we used to get those done for pictures at school. I also am absolutely smitten with my Cricut….gonna break it out today me thinks 😉

P.S. I think I got more out of your impromtu bday gathering than you did….I owe ya one for sure!!!! I wanna take ya to tea at the tea house sometime to say thanks. You are so special to me….keep those jokes coming, laughter really is the best medicine (that an fabulous girlfriends).

    Hugs,
    🙂 Heather S.

  5. What an absolutely fantastic idea!! I love how you have redecorated the frame as the seasons come and go. The flowers and butterflies look so darling…I love it! You have the best ideas:).

  6. Hello Lisa!
I am amazed at what you can do with a staple gun – I have no idea what a Fascinater is, but I bet I would love it! I think the bow adds another element of flow or movement (much like the butterflies)! And I think it creates some balance at the top against the butterflies at the bottom. And for no money – what does your storage/garage area look like dear?? It must be like going to the best craft store/warehouse ever!

I think it looks great – oh, to be that talented!!

What a blessing you are for me!

  7. Dear Lucky Cricut Keeper,
*sigh* one day, one day! Maybe when our “no spend” days are over… I WILL own a Cricut! How you tempt me, Lisa dear…. Good thing I love you and your blog! [heehee]

If I knew what I was talking about I might say that the darkness of the ribbon bow actually anchors the lighter colors of the room’s palatte and adds an elegant undertone that counters the cutesy aura of the spring motif… but I have no clue other than I LIKE the ribbon so I say keep it!

P.S. My Mr. Loggerhead actually said I could paint our piano after I proved to him (via your blog) that there were other people in the World insane enough to attempt it! I owe you BIG TIME, my friend.

  8. Wow! Your room is lovely! Thanks for the BEAUTIFUL and practical ideas. I really like the bow over the picture…and the changeability of that central decoration! VERY fun! Can’t wait to see what you’ve done w/ those lovely pots!

  9. Boy oh boy, do I ever LOVE this idea of having an interchangeable frame ….where I can change the ‘scene’ at any given whim. Incredible!! Love what you did with it through the year.

Do stop by if you get a chance to visit. Happy Happy Rango Weekend.

  10. I have the exact same couch as you! Woah! I didn’t even know another one existed until I stumbled upon your blog (which is amazing by the way)! Do you have the love seat too? Cause I do! I too would like to recover it but I am not sure that will happen. New furniture is out of the question as well! Haha! I LOVE the idea of a changeable frame though! Being a teacher, you know I love my bulletin boards, and this is the perfect idea for something in the home! I am going to try it! 😀 Thanks so much for the inspiration and I am excited to look and see how you decorate with your green couch!
