Plays and Playhouses

We had a laid back, easy going Christmas.  The best part for me was the play on Christmas Eve.

Every year the kids want to do a Christmas play.  I know one thing for sure….it is some kind of payback for all of the horrible plays I made my parents watch when I was a child.  Although I am confident that my rendition of  “Don’t it Make My Brown Eyes Blue” that I lip-synched on the fireplace was as good as any Vegas show.

This year I decided to take the bull by the horns.  Instead of them writing their own script (which tend to be hours long with dozens of costume changes), I found a play on the internet and gave it to them as a homeschool assignment.  It was stinkin’ hilarious.

They were animals in the stable where the Christ child was born.  They practiced for weeks.  It was so good; I wanted to watch it over and over.

“The Great Manger Mystery”

“Hey guys!  There’s something swimming in our food!”

Curtain call….

Don’t you just love the antlers strapped to Elijah’s head with a belt?  Priceless.

The next day, Christmas day, was easy.  The kids opened a couple of gifts while we ate my mom’s sausage balls and cookies that the boys and I baked.

Levi’s playhouse was a hit.  We had it set up so he’d see it first thing in the morning and he loved it.  He took his toys in there and stayed in it playing and waving to us from the window in the door.  It was worth the late night hours and neck pain.

This ain’t no girly house…it’s a MAN house.

I didn’t want flowers, so I made a hanging basket.  Really, really cute.

Don’t get me started on the key and lock.  Double cuteness.

There’s a removable fire in the fireplace.

Two more walls of adorable little boy pleasure.

I’ve already been told several times by people that live here that apples and oranges don’t grow on the same tree.  Doesn’t anyone in my house have an imagination?

A garden for growing onions, carrots and lettuce. A rabbit for nibbling the veggies and a shovel to plant more.

Don’t tell me this doesn’t make you want to play here too.

I used furniture lifters for the table, then made the playhouse to cover them.  The extra height will help when he gets a little older.

The mail, oh the mail.  It makes me smile every time I look at it.

I am thinking about listing these on my etsy shop.  I couldn’t make a lot of them because they are so time consuming, but I’d love to make a few every year.  I enjoyed the creativity and coming up with little things to add.

So how was your Christmas?  Were there wrappings strewn about and children laughing?  Have ou cleaned it all up yet?  Or are you waiting for the weekend?

Me, it’s all cleaned up.  You know I can’t stand the mess.  But we’re going to enjoy a slow paced week.

How about you?

  1. The playhouse is gorgeous!
Love the play idea, out tradition is to go look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve after our roast.
Glad you had a lovely Christmas.
We will be doing some cleaning up here today – somethings haven’t found a home yet!

  2. The playhouse is absolutely adorable! It’s yet another thing that makes wish I owned a sewing machine…or knew how to sew.

Glad you had a great Christmas. Ours was wonderful, just rather loud with the addition of a new baby. 6 kids under 9 in the extended family makes for a loud (but so happy) holiday.

  3. That is the cutest thing ever!! I just love what you did and I bet little Levi is having a blast playing in it! We used to do plays when we were little….I loved the pics of your kids. They are so creative! Glad you had a wonderful Christmas. Happy New Year!

  4. Just as adorable as the girl’s version. My Jack would adore a house like this! (And probably have the mail hanging from the fruit tree within minutes. . . ) Fabulous job.

  5. Dear After Christmas Musings,
