My Free Decorating Challenge

It has begun.  Christmas.

The kids have been asking to get out the Christmas decorations and, being the good mom that I am, I let them.

It’s a sacrifice, but if they are willing to do the work…..

A few years ago I made the leap from the traditional colors of red and green to some newer, fresher colors.

My trees are white and the ornaments are red and teal/blue.

This year, to freshen it up I am adding in some black.

But I’ve made myself a rule.  I can not buy ANYTHING.  The economy has hit hard at our house and I have no business spending money on Christmas decorations.  I think it will be fun to be creative.  I already have some ideas.

My friends have been inspiring me.

Cha Cha made this book page wreath that I am going to copy.

I’ll just add a little bit of Christmas charm to it and have a new wreath for the holidays.

And Kellie has been up to some Christmas crafting.

She’s even using my new colors!  You have my address Kellie, if you want to send me some of those cuties!

My friend over at Funky Junk Interiors (OK, so she doesn’t actually know we’re friends) made the most gorgeous light fixture.

My head is positively swimming with ideas for something like this!

My rule is simple….no cost decorating.  Nothing.  Not one penny.  I already bough two rolls of wrapping paper, but that is it.  Everything else must be free.

I will admit to having an advantage in that I have a LOT of supplies on hand.  But still….I promise you I won’t add one thing to the house this season unless it was completely free.

If you have links or ideas I would love to hear about them.  If you don’t have a blog, send me some pictures.  I’ll be posting your ideas here every few days…so keep ’em coming!

Let’s get this party started!

  1. Wow, I am holding off on Christmas decorating for just a tad longer but I must say my shopping is almost done! Although having said that I have some ideas of some things to make for extended family and friends. Oh and I want to declutter my house before Christmas and I really need to get moving on that!

  2. Wow Deeanne! You’ve got a lot of goals there. LOL! I’d say decluttering DEFINITELY counts as free decorating. 🙂 Lisa~

  3. Love the book wreath. I have an idea, why not make miniature book wreaths and tie a ribbon around them for ornaments. You could even paint the pages.

My free decoration at my house are pine cones we collected and spray painted gold. I put them in a big red bowl on my coffee table and voila – instant Christmas spirit.

    Happy decorating!

  4. No way!
I have a white tree that I put red, silver or pearl and aqua ornaments on!!
I also have 4 other trees, but don’t tell anyone!
I just love that book wreath. I think my daughter, Sarah would love that out of sheet music…over her “Precious” (piano).
    Thinking… Hmmm…
Also, what is funny-I also bought TWO rolls of wrapping paper- a scrolly red/white damask and red with white polka dots.
    Was gonna use aqua ribbon.
If we lived next door to each other, I’d wanna switch stuff with you all the time!
Have fun decorating! I know I will…can’t wait to see your whole home 🙂
    Hugs to you!

  5. Can’t wait to see the results…
I watched your youtube videos…my hubs watched too. We laughed so hard at L’s video saying “Dada” – we just love little ones! (Well, when ours are asleep.) 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving! You are a super blessing!
