Hair Product Review and More Uninteresting Things

I got home today with a new haircut and was ready for the compliments.  “Mommy! I love your hair!”  “Your hair is so cute!”  “My darling, beautiful wife, your hair has just made what was already beautiful even more heavenly.”

I walked around the house for about an hour and no one…not one, single soul…noticed.

Wow.  I really thought I was ROCKIN’ my new do.

That’s OK.  The oatmeal without sugar that I make for breakfast in the morning will wake them up.  Someone will have to look up from their gruel and see the gorgeousness that rests atop my head.

So maybe it’s more similar to my old style than I thought.

Subject change:  I saw “Secretariat”.  I can’t decide what I think.  At first I thought, “That was pretty good.  The kids would like it.”  But something was bugging me.  I mulled it over while the haircutter lady (what do they call themselves now?) did her magic.  It suddenly hit me, the whole movie was about a woman leaving her family to follow her own dream and have personal satisfaction.  Hmmmm.  Yuck.   So for what it’s worth, I don’t see any real redeeming value.  There is nothing inappropriate, no kissing, no swearing, no Hollywood craziness.  There re sweet moments, but there’s also just this little message, “It doesn’t matter if you leave your kids alone for years to follow your heart.  They’ll probably be OK.  If not, they can go off and leave their family someday to fulfill their own needs.”

OK, back to the original topic: I always come home from getting a haircut and immediately wash the style out and fix it myself.  The lady doesn’t fix it the way I want no matter what I tell her.  But she cuts it the way I want, so I don’t complain.  I always, ALWAYS, have a little panic moment when I wonder if I’ll be able to make it look like I imagined.  I wish I knew more about hair sprays and root lifters and pomade.

I’ve barely just stopped using Dippity Do and AquaNet.

I can say I like the Axe Laid Back Shaggy Look Cream.  I have a little bit of curl to my hair, but not enough to be cool looking unless I do something to it.  Gels just make it look wet and unbrushed.  On days when I don’t want to spend any time on my hair this stuff will bring out the natural curl without making it look stiff.

If you have a favorite hair product, I’d love to know about it.

Unless it’s one of those ones called Big Sexy.  I don’t think I could have that sitting on my bathroom counter.  Every time one of the children came into the room I’d worry they would see my hairspray and start asking all kinds of questions about things I don’t want to talk about.  Ever.

So let’s all share.  What hair products do you like and where do you buy them?

Maybe I’ll discover something that my family will notice.

  1. I know that feeling, when you even start to hint around “do you notice anything different?” and they look up and stare at you with this puzzled look on their faces.
I can’t really recommend any products because we have totally different stuff in Australia.
But I have been using Aloe Vera straight from the garden to stop frizzy hair and it really works!

  2. okay I am laughing, we like to be called stylist but will answer to haircutter lady or even hey you, but stylist is our favorite. I buy my products from the warhouse and I have to be honest I love going there and opening every bottle and seeing how they smell. I can give you a whole list of things to try and not one of the will be BIG sexy hair, thier stuff doesn’t smell good so I don’t like it, well that and how do I explain that to every kid who comes with their mom to get a hair cut, much less my own. If it makes you feel better Hubby never notices when I change my hair even when it is a big change.

Hope you have a great day, I am off to cut hair all day,
    Cha Cha

  3. Oddly enough I do have ONE child who notices when I get my hair cut or styled. He is the one my husband usually cues off of… LOL My husband will notice on his own when he sniffs my hair as I use nothing on it right now. In fact I am desperately in need of something but I have the opposite problem of yours. My hair is straight, as in board straight… so I wear it in a bob to add a little “swing”.

My eldest son does use the same Axe product as you because it helps to keep his moderately curly hair managable. What I would like to know is where did he get that hair? It must be a recessive gene, ha ha!

    Have a great day!

  4. I can’t help you with hair products. Sorry. I shampoo, condition, blow dry and then I’m done. When my hair is pixie short, I use the cheapest gel and hairspray I can get at Dollar General. I guess I don’t need much.

As for Secretariat, I had a sneaking suspicion there was something about that movie I wasn’t going to like. Thank you for letting me know. That would really bother me. I’ll just stick with the Provident Films movies.
BTW, I would love to see your new “do”.
    Have a great day!

  5. LOL! Cha Cha, I should have figured you were a stylist! Your hair always looks so cute! I’m with you on the smells. I have never thought to smell before I buy. This is why we need blogs. We learn those simple things from each other.

Peggy, I discovered when I was looking the Axe products up online that the one I use is for men. Oh dear. Well, I like it, so I’m going to keep using it and hope it doesn’t bring out my masculine side. 🙂

Deanne, thanks for the aloe vera tip. I’ve never heard that. Lisa~

  6. One hair product that I can not go without is Silk Infusion by CHI. My hair has a lot of wave to it and if I don’t put this in, it get REALLY frizzy! A little goes a long way and my bottle has lasted almost 1 year! I put it on my towel dried hair and kind of scrunch to bring out the curls more, then I just let it air dry. Super fast and easy, and it looks good! Plus it adds a nice shine 😉

    Good Luck!

P.S. I think you should put up a picture of your new hair style!!!!

  7. Lisa,
Okay all of that and no “picture”?
I say we all take a vote ….don’t you think we need a pic here?
lol-I would love to see one & how it looks!
Around here we have a mix…straight, slight curl, curly….
When the children look at older pic’s I love the “oh daddy you have ‘hair’ there”? Yes, and it was ‘curly’! He tells them with 8 children and 6 (ahem) being girls…thats why he has none & if so…when could he get in the bathroom? Ha! He’d have a dozen if God would send them! 🙂
Any way we have lot’s of “Aussie” along with the wal-mart brand of Pantene-(Equate) Pro-Vitamin, these work wonderful on many “hair-needs”. My sweet gal with the as you said slight/curl uses-Garnier-Frutis Stle Curl Shaping spray gel.
    Hope this is a help.
Now ; how about a “PHOTO” of that new-dew?
    Blessings~
    ~Lori

  8. OK..the movie thing. I was watching the previews for that and I was thinking the SAME thing. I always things like a stay at home mom, so when I see anyone (politician, especially) leaving to pursue a career – I’m totally turned off! Can’t help you on hair products- I use nothing in my hair!

  9. My grandmother still buys me cans of AquaNet!!! and always follows with, “You know, they use to only sell this at the beauty shops . . . ” Still makes me laugh everytime! {I actually use it when I run out of mine . . but don’t tell anybody 😉 }

  10. i love the part where you will forget to put sugar in their oatmeal so they’ll look up. 😉

my favorite product USED to be made by PANTENE it was called texture hair pomade. until the DISCONTINUED it. oh the joys….looking for an exact match. loved that stuff.

  11. You made me laugh out loud.I am sure you look as cute as ever. Wish I had some products to share about. My hair is very long(mostly because I stopped getting it cut)I sorta got sick of hair cuts. I know the products you speak of, some of the names are outrageous…bed head, big sexy hair…goodness. Are they selling to the twenty something crowd?
I have been on a kitchen cabinet and all natural kind of kick. Apple cider vinegar mixed with water will make your hair shine, and a tiny drop of grapeseed oil on the ends of your hair is better that the nicest leave in conditioner.Hope I don’t sound too crunchy. I just find I remember vinegar and oil more than mouse and gel…now if mouse and gel were multi purpose then I may remember.Hmmm

  12. I love all of the Nexxus hair products and right now I am using one of their get-out-the-frizzies creams (can’t remember the name) and it is working great to keep my straight hair bob from turning into a frizzy mop!

  13. I think the new hairdo looks awesome, girl! Since I have really short hair that only requires a quick blowdry and toss with the fingers (due to the precision of the cut), I don’t have any suggestions on hair products. LOL. Your comments on the movie “Secretariat” caught my eye, though. My husband and I went to see it a couple of days ago and I walked away with the same mixed feelings. You absolutely put your finger on it when you talked about the theme that seems to say “It’s okay to leave your family to follow your dreams”. It seemed the only time this was really addressed in the movie was when Penny lay on the bed, sobbing as she listened to her daughter sing “Silent Night” at her “peace pageant” which she was missing. Any other aspect of her absence in her children’s and husband’s life was pretty much glossed over. Consequently, I came away feeling less than emotionally connected to the story. It’s wonderful to see a film come out of Hollywood that is “clean” enough to share with the entire family, but I wish this issue had been handled differently.

  14. I have to say that I do LOVE big Sexy products. I like the way they smell, and the way they perform. (Just hide the can in the cabinet!)
