Part 3 OR Don’t Try This at Home

It’s been a whirlwind.

Building furniture, painting, sewing, painting, cleaning, painting…..there might have been a little crying in there too.  It’s all a blur.

The dining room/school room is finished.

If you need a reminder of what it used to look like and how we got here, see Part 1 and Part 2.

Here is the side of the room that you have seen already, but with a few small changes.

You can see both of the tables.  I got them from a guy at the flea market that restores furniture.  Love him.  And I’m pretty sure he feels the same way about me.

The fireplace is original to the old house.  I built the mantle about a year ago.

All of the chairs are white now.  Your votes were unanimous….paint them white.  I made slip covers for the thrones at the ends of the black table.  James and I require comfort at all times.

I also got the big cabinet at the flea market.  It houses a TV (for school and the occasional “Andy Griffith Show”) and all of our games.

Keep spinning around to see the rest of the room….try not to get dizzy.

This is where my children become geniuses.  Or socially awkward.  However you want to look at it.

You can see into Noah’s room from here.  Another big project we did earlier this year.

Here’s another look at the world’s longest school table.  I am thinking about calling Guinness.

Do you see the little cabinet that I added under the desk?

Hope and I built it.  It is specially designed to hold the kids’ computers.

Those were the only things from the old desks that we couldn’t fit into our vintage lockers.

I’ve never built a whole cabinet before.  Yeah me.  Let’s do a happy dance.

Oh sorry.  Back to reality.

Of course I had to add monograms.

“L” for “Likes to change things around,” and “J” for “Just barely tolerates his crazy wife.”

You all know I love my Cricut.  I used it on Levi’s chair.  He’s thrilled.

I’ll leave you with a picture of what we call, “the school table.”

I got these pretty linen squares at Laurie Anna’s in Canton.  The cages on my mantle also came from them.  I tell you, that is a dangerous place.  If you go there, take smelling salts.  You will faint from the adorableness.

I guess this means I should actually get some school done now.  Can’t I just enjoy the clean-ness of it all for a few days?  Sigh.

  3. Nice room, we never had a designated school room, we only have two kids so school was in the living room, dining room, car, separate rooms on “those days” Now that time is about over, my youngest will be a senior… sad.

  4. Janet, I looked at our house pictures….it’s lovely!

Shannon, ours isn’t really designated either. We do have to eat there. LOL! But it is nice to have 2 tables and some desk space.

Thank you all so much for your comments! Lisa~

  5. Lisa, It is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to see it in real life someday. What pleasant school days you will have!

  6. This is THE most adorable homeschooling room I have EVER seen!
And trust me, I have seen a lot of them!
I would have to bring smelling salts if I walked in here!
I have the same lyre-back chairs in my dining room!
Am thinking they need a re-do after seeing yours–yummy!
My Duncan Phyfe table would look great in black, too….
    Oh dear, an Autumn project.

  7. I just got the latest issue of Texas Homeschool Coalition Review magazine and to my surprise I recognize the name of the family that is highlighted each month, You!! I have never recognized any family before. What a small world that I would find your blog and then see an article about you in the same week. Very nice article and photo of your family.

  8. Looks like another Before and After submission! (and congrats for winning this week, by the way!)

I love your line about becoming geniuses or socially awkward. My wife and I homeschool our kids and they are ANYTHING but awkward. Well-spoken, respectful, and brilliant, yes. Awkward, no. We actually find they interact better with kids of all ages than their peers who are “appropriately socialized” in the nearby public school.

We did a major overhaul of our house this year to add a dedicated school room. We call it the “office” because sometimes we’re still embarrassed that we have a school room. Darn social pressures.

  12. LOVE the homeschooling room-I am sending this link to a friend who homeschool her 7 kids and theya re moving-Lord willing-next year so maybe she can use this room as inspiration as to what to look for in her next house!

  13. Love your “school” room.I have a separate room where we try to do school, but its a lot harder to get to it then. I’m planning on moving into the dining room too, hopefully then it will be easier to just go do school already.
