Is Irresponsibility a Bad Thing?

I wandered into an antique mall to see if I could find something vintage and fabulous to use on the food table for our graduation ceremony this weekend.

I did find something fabulous, but it has nothing to do with the graduation.  I bought it anyway.  Which means I went over budget on the graduation because I spent some of the money on something I don’t need.

I never promised to be responsible.

You’ll understand when you see what I found:

It’s great, right?!  Everyone needs a candy machine in their house.

I have been looking for ways to give the kids little rewards from time to time.  Now they can earn quarters for the machine.  How cool is that?!

But you know me.  I can never leave well enough alone.  Plus I have gone spray paint crazy lately, as evidenced by my spiffy lockers.

So I took it from drab to fab:

I hated the gold and the black was rusty.

Did you know how much candy these things hold?  I usedseveral large bags of each kind and still it’s not half full.  The picture is deceptive because I shoved the candy in a pile up to the front of the glass.

Not responsible.  Deceptive.  We’re making a list.

I still need something vintage for the graduation tables.  Maybe I could use the candy machine after all.  If I asked people to bring quarters and buy their own snacks then I could make up for going over budget.

Not responsible.  Deceptive.  Cheapskate.

Having your own private graduation is a lot of work.  Food, decor, programs, the list goes on and on.

It’s been a challenge to decorate because I want it to be very masculine.  So plants instead of flowers, twine instead of ribbon, burlap instead of satin.

I hit Hobby Lobby yesterday and got plants, rocks and tassels for half price.  I already had some little vases/candleholders from IKEA ($2 each).

So I put this all together:

And made four of these:

I was going for the look of, “I got all of this stuff out of my yard,” but not too tacky.

The tassel is my homage to traditional graduation ceremonies.

Ours will be anything but traditional.  It’s more like a church service.  A church service with a table full of Jacob’s baby pictures.

Maybe that redeems me a little from my aforementioned flaws.

And if it that’s not enough….there will be cookies.

  1. I love your candy dispenser! I would love to find something like that for my house! :0) I don’t blame you at ALL for being irresponsible! Oh, and P.S.–Thank you for your post on dealing with tattlers. I read it, and immediately put it into use. It’s such a simple idea, but it’s already working!

  2. and we all know cookies make everything better! Love your centerpieces. Very masculine, yet attractive. My little one saw your candy machine and immediately wondered why we don’t have one at our house….thanks! ;o)

  4. I SO GET YOU!
Last year, when my daughter graduated from our homeschool co-op (14 grads), I was in charge of getting all details together-the venue, the decor, the food (we settled on a simple reception with cupcakes, coffee and lemonade–thank goodness), the announcements, music, speakers—ack! it was stressful–no wonder you went off the deep end and bought something non-graduation related!
    I would have, too!
Bummer, I could kick myself. I had a yard sale with a girlfriend in early Spring, she was selling her no-longer-wanted vintage candy/gum dispenser machine for $15. I passed on it. Oh, well.
Yours is so cute, it makes me want one!
Enjoy these graduation planning days, they go by too swiftly, then they are gone to college and we’re sad.
    Such cheery thoughts for you!
Anyway, hugs and prayers for you!
