Persia and Fashion

For the past few weeks we have been studying the Persians and the Medes.

This study of the history of the world has been fascinating for me. In school…well…let’s just say I was more interested in other things. Fashion, lunch, getting out of P.E., important things like that.

But in my defense, I didn’t have a super cool, really dynamic teacher like my kids have. (wink-wink)

We especially love the art studies. They get to choose a project that depicts what they’ve learned in an artistic way. My Teacher’s Manual makes suggestions, which I usually require them to follow. If it was totally up to them, I’d be running to Walmart daily for things like poster board and glue sticks. Oh no….they can find something around here to make their projects. Mommy’s too busy thinking about lunch. And fashion. And how to avoid exercise. Wait….am I detecting a pattern in my life?

The 12 year old made a model of the bridge over the Hellespont. She used styrofoam out of a box we kept from the TV we bought a year ago. (it’s the first time I’ve ever been glad that DUH makes us keep EVERY box).

It was cute…..

Lean down and show us your pretty face…..

The 13 year old did relief carvings out of potatoes. They were supposed to be stamps, but they dried out too much and got all shriveled. Being the true homeschool mom, that turned into a study of why potatoes shrivel when cut.

Our 15 year old made up a song about something (I couldn’t quite understand it, but I clapped really loud!)

And number one son did a model of a scroll that King Darius would have made. He even made a ring, like one the king would have used to put his seal on the scroll.

He made the ring out of baling wire. You’d be astonished if you knew how many things we make out of baling wire around here.

Of course, I’m keeping the ring as my teacher gift. I think I deserve it, don’t you?

After all…..I had to teach about the Persians and the Medes when I really don’t know anything about them. But notice that I still ate lunch, didn’t exercise and hey! Now that I think about it, the ring became fashion….so I’m still me. Whew!

🙂

This will be reposted on my second blog.
